Windows (your opinion)

Currently I have various operating systems installed on my rigs - 2 x Win 7 HP, 2 x XP Pro, 3 x XP Home, 1 x PCLinuxOS, 2 x Mint 9, 1 x Ubuntu 10.

I am fairly experienced with all of these, but have never personally used Vista - from my experience with sorting out other peoples's Vista problems I wouldn't have it if it was given away free.

As we are now in an era where XP is on the way to being declared obsolete, while Vista will (luckily) be left to die a natural death, it would seem more beneficial to discuss the merits of Windows 7 and the imminent Windows 8 ?

Do you have any thoughts/opinions of your own on the question you have asked ?

Windows became widely popular when Windows 95 was released. It was soon followed by Windows 98, and later Windows ME. This series of Windows had very little security, and also was pretty unstable. I remember that I had to perform repair installs regularly, about twice a year.

Parallel to that, Microsoft also offered a professional version, called Windows NT. It used the NTFS file system, and was very much more stable (and secure) that the 9x series. NT 4.0 was followed by Windows 2000 (5.0) and later Windows XP (5.1). In 2007 Microsoft released Windows Vista (6.0), with much improved security, but it never gained much popularity. Most users preferred to remain on XP, which was probably the post popular Windows version ever. Last year Windows 7 (which is really 6.1) was released, and it seems far better and more popular than Vista ever was.

Mac OS (my personal opinion): I'd rather go back to Windows 3.1 than use Mac OS; it is one of the most useless systems ever created - you cannot really do anything with it!

XP, 7, Linux , OSX are all fine operating systems

It really depends on what you want to do , what hardware you are running and what's your budget
