Win7 And Linux

Is there a safe way to dual boot these two?

I have tried several attempts and ultimately ended up with a corrupted MBR every time.I even tried to run Linux from external HD and still the corruption.

I have read several threads on this and can't seem to get a grip on it...:(

I do enjoy playing around with Linux, but I'd like to keep Windows as my default OS.

Any helpful links or tutorials?Something a child could understand?

Thanks.

I'm not an expert on this, but have dual boot installations of both

- XP with PC LinuxOS 2010 and

- XP with Mint 9

on a couple of old "play" machines.

I always use separate physical HDs for each O/S and install the Microsoft O/S before the Linux one - to let Grub do it's own thing :)

As boris says, use separate physical drives, and install Windows first.

Beware of the distros that use GRUB2 as the boot manager it is buggy. That includes the latest Mint 10 and Ubuntu.

PCLOS and PinguyOS are user friendly and worth a Look.

This should give you a good idea about how to dual boot,

Great (simple) video of installing Mandriva.

I figured that if I can get a grip on the boot system on the only internal drive,I would try the external again. And then try other disros afterwards.

I found out that the problem with Linux taking over at boot was caused by Windows System Reserved seemingly being hidden from the manager. On a hunch I went to advanced and opted to boot from another OS.It searched and came back with Sys Reserved (Active of course-:fool: ).Put that at the top and Windows second.Followed by Mandriva.Loving it.

Thanks for leading me down the path of righteousness.:good:

I can play again.Freedom....
