Mogman
Ok so I have a lady that I'm trying to help out using windows 7 home pro (possibly just pro) and she is saving csv files for whatever she does...The problem comes up when she's saving some of the last of her files she does a save as, names the file then for some reason can't find the file again in explorer. So, just to be sure she tries the same process again naming the file the same thing... It asks her to overwrite the file at that point, so she does and it STILL doesn't show up.I hopped onto her machine to see what I could do and I turned on show hidden files (even show system files just in case) and nothing. I went through the same process she went through and looked in the save as viewer to see if I could find the file, and it was actually there in the list! I could understand the file not being in the save as list due to filtering on file type but what conditions would need to happen for it to show up in the save as screen but NOT in explorer? One thing that I didn't try now that I think of it would be seeing if I can find it using command prompt... but the problem would still exist where it wouldn't show up in explorer.I've NEVER seen something similar to this so any help would be appreciated in this case. rong
Don't have my W7 at the moment but if you click the save as don't you get a box with the save path? if so just go to the same place and enable show all files
Mogman
Yep, I click save as and it gives me a selection window for where to save... I select where to save and save the file and it doesn't show up in explorer at that point.
bludgard
... but what conditions would need to happen for it to show up in the save as screen but NOT in explorer?I would venture to guess a registry file that has gone missing or corrupted.A safe thing you can do is check the Windows disk for errors.Maybe run the system file checker.Without being able to get hands on with the machine this is all conjecture and may prove uninformed. There are some advanced procedures that may repair the OS.This may be done from Windows install media. There are other ways as well that I haven't tried so will not suggest.Others here may be able to shed additional insight. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
I guess the program to edit and save the .csv file is Excel.I also guess that the default location to save the file is 'My Documents'. This is where things sometimes get complicated - there may be multiple locations (multiple users) with 'My Documents' folders. The first thing I would do is a Search for the file; when it's found (and I'm sure it will be found), then you get the full path of the folder where it's located; usually 'My Documents' are somewhere in the %userprofile% (which on Windows 7 is somewhere C:\Users\...). bludgard
'My Documents' ... (which on Windows 7 is ... C:\Users\...).Yes.By default.
MANEMAN
What Pat has said is correct. "Search for the file. And it will be found"Try installing Everything Search (Free !)If it's there "Everything" will find it.Also in the same vein I've found these helpful in the past when file/folder searching:So I'll throw them in just in case anyone else is reading.Copy Path Open File LocationAt least one of those not needed with Windows 7 - I think. bludgard
...So I'll throw them in just in case anyone else is reading.John.Are we feeling magnanimous today? For the OP,I believe the tools to track down spectral folders/files in the aforementioned haunted machine have been bequeathed to you.Go forth and exercise the bejesus out of this unholy, sorcerous contraption.(Sorry,I get a little goofy when I take my meds.... )Welcome to Windows Forum,Mogman.Good to hear from ya,MANEMAN. I can't say if they did or didn't honestly... I didn't try em all. I ended up telling her to save in a location other than my documents and the problem hasn't come up again... Which makes sense as I've heard some nasty things about my documents. Thanks though.
