Windows Xp Restore And Updates

Recommended Posts

I have had the need to use the restore feature to revert my computer back a couple of months. No problems - it is now working as before.

However - when I look in Control Panel>Add and Remove Programmes I find that the Microsoft updates I downloaded in the last month or so are still listed.

I tried the Microsoft update site and it reported that I had no critical or other updates to download.

Hence it has left me wondering exactly what the Restore feature does. I thought it took your O.S back to a previous state but left your data alone - in which case - surely it should erradicate updates downloaded after the date restored to.

Do any of our experts have an explanation - but in simple language please cuz I am far from being a computer buff.

I posted a similar question on the PCA Board last February but didn't really understand the answers - especially the one from Microsoft. Now it has happened again my curiosity has got the better of me.

Hmmm........Well the way I see it is that the system restore thing is basically a snapshot of all the basic o/s stuff needed to make your system run..

Think of it like a blondes brain...... needs to know to breathe and to walk and to get up when it is light and go to bed when it is dark.

The hotfixes and updates etc are not essential to the running of the os

Like..........the blonde puts on a red dress and learns how to say hello in french... bonjour!! Not essential to the breathing and walking etc.

When you restore......it is just the core essential stuff that is restored to an earlier date.......the other stuff is superfisial so isn't touched.

Like the blonde gets drunk at 8.00pm......... forgets how to breathe and thinks to herself... oh I wish I never got drunk. Her fairy godmother will take her back to 8 in the morning where she knows how to breathe but she will still be wearing the red dress and know how to say hello in french.
