MarkZ
Hi,My new laptop (XP professinal) has suddenly started to act strangely. When booting up..everything is normal. But after while something happens and programs gets "Not Responding". Especially browsers (Opera, IE, Chorus)but also exlporer, Ultraedit. The strangest thing is that I can't terminate processes, not even with taskkill or kill. All I can do is to restart laptop. I don't want to reinstall XP..at least not without trying to fix it first.I haven't found any action which triggers this...except while trying to send an email via Opera client email. Then it happens every time.I have checked disk and run regedit cleaner, tried with new RAM. Nothing helps. Also HW seems to be ok.Event viewer doesn't show anything. Any ideas what I can try? Digerati
Have you scanned for malware? Is this still under warranty? I would contact the maker's tech support to get on record you are having problems.
MANEMAN
Hi there, and Do scan for malware first as Digerati has suggested.Try to remember when the fault first started to occur, and try to find a "System Restore Point" just before that point in time. The instructions for using system restore for your operating system (XP) are as follows:"Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore. Click the Restore My Computer to an earlier time, next, Choose restore date." Continue. If you have got your dates right your computer should be restored to a time before the fault occured. You may have to reinstall some of your software and settings. Here are some links to more fully understanding system restore:/>http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_restore.htm/>http://www.5starsupport.com/faq/xp-system-restore.htm#1-22 "suddenly started to act strangely". This statement suggests that you will not have to find a restore point very far back.If all is failing, follow Digeratis advice as to contacting both the retailer and manufacturer.Once you have your computer back, and running as it should, do think about a registry backup program such as ERUNT or the now more popular updated version of the same software, - ERUNT GUI - CLICK HERE* Read more about it here: http://www.freewaregenius.com/2010/11/08/erunt-gui-backup-and-restore-your-registry-with-a-single-click/ERUNT can at times be even more useful than system restore. (ERUNT GUI also works with both Windows 7, 32 and 64 bit versions)Hope this has been of some help to you.John.
MarkZ
well the laptop is a corporate one ...and the restorepoint has been disabled by group policy...don't know why.Sure I could bring it to IT for fix...but all they will do is to re-install a fresh XP. I want to try myself first. How about the unability to terminate any "Not Responding" process by any means? Doesn't that point to some kernel problem? Actually the problem started when I destroyed my personal 500G HDD (in DVD bay)...I believe the MFT were corrupted when I removed the HD while it was still writing?? At least this is my theory. Some of data were destroyed...not sure if this has nothing to do with laptop problem, but it started to fail after this incident...so maybe it has something to do.Although I'm not using the HDD anymore..I still try to recover data in another laptop
MarkZ
And yet another thing...why there isn't any log writings what so ever? Is there any tools that I can put logging. I can't even start to look at the problem because there is nothing I can work with? I can reproduce the problem by trying to send an email via Opera Client...It freezez EVERY TIME. And after that nothing works..all other processes are pretty much "Not Responding"Thanks,Mark
Boris
If your IT people have disabled System Restore with Group Policy Editor, then they have probably disabled other "normal" XP functionality as well. Don't waste your time trying to get around whatever controls that they have imposed - let them sort it out :)
bludgard
I agree with Digerati and Boris.MANEMAN spoke from the heart ,yet he was not fully informed of your particular situation.I noticed you didn't reply to the "scan for malware" bit.It appears to be either an infection or your company's IT has shut you down.Did you not get an error message when trying to open Event Viewer?Something along the lines of,"Unable to complete the operation of "Sub Menu".The interface is unknown"?That's the message I get when I try to open Event Viewer on my XP.However I have it disabled.Along with System Restore.I ask because it would help if you were more forthcoming with information that may or may not help in diagnostics.Don't go messin' around too much.Every time you try to access something it is logged. It will only make you look like you are trying to cover your tracks. You gotta face the music.Take it to the IT and suck it up.He'll find whatever it was that caused the problem(s) and fix you right up.You may want to invest in your own computing box if you like fiddlin' 'round. If you already own one, keep your work and play seperate. That way if your play machine starts acting out,you can play Crack Computer Expert Investigator and will eventual learn how all this works. You may even outwit the witty.;) One
