horseatingweeds Posted January 20, 2011 Report Share Posted January 20, 2011 I've got a Compaq Presario sr1000t that I bought in 2003. I just used Compaq's recovery partition to reinstall, which looks like it cleared out the directory and brought it and the windows files to their original from-Compaq condition. But this includes a whole load of garbage, including Norton, which I can't seem to find a removal tool for. The only ones I can find are for Notron 2003, and I think this one is 2001. My numerous program files are still there as are the menu links in the All Programs menu, with many linking to nothing. It's kind of a mess. Not the fresh install I was expecting. Is there a way to reinstall windows fresh and alone??? Will using the C:\WINDOWS\I380\WINNT32.exe do it? I've got some recovery CD I made, and a set I got with the system, in addition to the recovery partition. This reminds me why in 2003 I swore never to buy a ready-made ever again. bludgard Posted January 20, 2011 Report Share Posted January 20, 2011 You can clean install the same version of Windows that came OEM on the machine.You will undoubtedly be asked for a product key at some point.If you have the key from the Certificate Of Authenticity,or by looking in Computer Properties,no worries.You will also most probably be making a call to Microsoft and all will be Authenticated and Genuine again.:) If you clean install,be sure to rid yourself of the hidden recovery partition as well.here is a link that may help you with finding that partition if needed.Come in handy if you want to upgrade.Here it is....And here.... horseatingweeds Posted January 21, 2011 Author Report Share Posted January 21, 2011 I gave that a look Belatucadrus, but PCDecrapifier seems to only see the same things Add/Remove does. What I ended up doing was reformatting the whole drive. I was experimenting with the recovery discs. They had only two options: Recovery or reformat. I thought I'd take a look at the reformat option, and before I knew it, the drive was being reformatted... So now I've reinstalled the Linux OS I had on another partition and am reconfiguring it.Windows runs a lot better now. And on the bright side, I was able to take a whole bunch of space that Windows was being stingy about and give it to Linux. :) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
