Hi there,and My personal view is that it would do no harm at all.Dont be at all suprised if the computer does something strange like come out of standby though. Standby/Hibernate/Sleep/ and "Safely Remove" are all features that rarely work as they should in a Windows Operating System.When we talk of "Harm" unplugging USB peripherals, we really mean the worse case scenario which is, - "File Corruption". I dont think this would happen.If you can get away with not unplugging in standby mode and there is no real reason to do so, - so much the better.John. -pops- Posted January 21, 2011 Report Share Posted January 21, 2011 The "safely remove" instruction for USB is to prevent drives being detached during reading/writing - which can have disastrous results not only to what is being read or written but can destroy the drive itself. In a dormant state, removal should be quite safe. I'm always bemused by TV (and film) dramas which feature the (usually surreptitious) use of memory sticks which are yanked out of the computer without a second thought. bludgard Posted January 22, 2011 Report Share Posted January 22, 2011 I have too many images on my USB HD to go pluggin' and unpluggin' at will.I try to play it safe.Seldom have I encountered an error removing the hardware safely in Win 7.When it has bucked me I wait till the machine is completely shut down and then remove it.I do not trust sleep,hibernate,hybrid sleep or even spinning down the HD.That is me,though.
