Need help buying new RAM

Recommended Posts

My friend asked me to upgrade his computer.Although I am facing some problems. He wants to upgrade RAM.He has MB:Asus P5KC(like me) and 2GB DDR2-800 Transcend AxeRAM timings:4-4-4-12 and 1.8V.He wants me to install other 2GB.I searched and couldn't find the same RAM anywhere.I found a Corsair ddr2-800 with 4-4-4-12 timings but with 2.1V.Everything matches except the brand and the volts. My question is,will corsair work with transcend or is there a problem with the different brands, and will corsair be automatically downgraded to work at 1.8V without changing timings and without failing? Also I heard on other forums that ASUS motherboards have problems with RAM .Is it true? Thanks in advance.

Go to http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.aspx?gclid=CKuX_qSQlKcCFdERfAodgzW4cg&cpe=pd_google_uk&ef_id=dd1NX6rYCmsAAMC4:20110219113448:s (if you're in the UK - there are equivalent sites internationally) and complete the Memory Advisory Tool questionnaire. This should tell you what you need to know.

I did the test and it told me I have to install memory in pairs that match my already installed memory. That means I cant install the Corsair memory? Also I have found some DDR3 memories in a really good price. They are 4gbs but they are PC3-12800 where the test showed that I support PC3-10600 and PC3-8500.What can I do?

I put your motherboard into Crucial and it came up with http://www.crucial.com/uk/search/searchresults.aspx?keywords=Asus%20P5KC As for the pairs I think that means that you have to have the same memory in two slots, my asus motherboard matches 1 & 3 and 2 & 4 and if you only have two strips of memory then they should be in those slots

Put some sticks of RAM in the thing. Check it out with some RAM test software. If it works ok sling it back to him. (Dont let on that you were the kind of twat who didn't have a clue what you were doing.)

If that isn't good enough for your friend................

Do the crucial scan as Pops has said. Pass the info on to your friend. Tell him where to get it. Let him pay for it. Stand by the side of him whilst he installs it.

If he doesn't like the way that you work, and doesn't talk to you at school anymore ?

He/She was just a ship that passed in the night, and not a true friend.

Sort situations and problems out quickly. - And move on in life.

Too much time wasted, - too many timewasters.

Shift 'em on and get rid as soon as possible. :flowers:
