Glad to see that this has been resolved to a happy ending.

I hate to be devil's advocate,but have you given any thought to backing up you operating system in the form of a disk image?It is really easy these days and as has been said could have had you back on course in as little as 20-45 minutes.Posssibly an hour.All with little more from you than a push of a button.You now have all the hardware needed (dads external HDD...;) ) .Get you some decent imaging software,a little research,a little fiddlin' and you are the backup King!
