ilyav
I have this Dell Vostro 17 laptop;it's 4 years old It has Windows XP on a 160 GB Samsung SATA drive, which still works. But it may be going bad. When I booted Fedora 13 Linux from a USB memstick, it complained after booting up, that the hard disk had over 1700 bad sectors. However, I have never seen any errors reported by Windows XP; wonder why? So, thinking my disk was dying and I need to save everything, I got a new 320 GB WD SATA hard drive to use as a replacement. I wanted a bigger disk anyhow so I could put Fedora Linux on there for dual boot. I already had a USB hard disk enclosure for 2-1/2" SATA disk. I put the new 320 drive into there temporarily until I can backup everything. I connected the USB drive to the laptop. When I boot Fedora Linux from USB memstick to see it, it is there and with fdisk, I can partition and format it just fine. But that is Linux, not windows XP.What Windows XP software can I use to clone the existing Windows install onto the new 320 hard disk so I can boot it before the old 160 GB one dies? -pops-
xxclone is a program I've used a lot in the past for transferring XP to another disk. You can get it free from http://www.xxclone.com/If your cloned drive is to replace a current "C" drive it will need to be "clean" - that is without any other operating systems on it. You can add other O/S later.Note that xxclone doesn't work very well with later versions of Windows.

The new 320GB disk will be clean. Fedora won't have been loaded yet. I hope that Windows XP isn't considered a "later version of Windows"? -pops-
xxclone works fine with XP. Make sure you follow the instructions to make the new drive bootable otherwise you are wasting your time. It's a very easy program to use.

-pops-
I agree that Clonezilla is a good program but it's not very user friendly to the less experienced.
