Hi, I was trying to get an old computer going for a friend of mine. This pc probably hasn't been used for a couple of years. Anyway, when I booted up, I installed AVG and made sure there were no viruses, so all is ok there. However, windows auto update keeps suggesting I update, which I do, but it seems to be the same updates everytime. I think this morning's two updates makes about the 8th or 9th time Ive updated this pc in the lasy 4 days. I copied the update info both times this morning and compared them. They are identical!

I can post the two update files if needed. Has anyone experienced this before? Not sure how much Microsoft still supports Xp, but couldnt find anything on this issue readily available on MS website. Thanks for any help on this.

Do you have all the XP Service Packs installed? If not, this may be preventing the updates installing properly.

Well I guess I was assuming those would install as well in the updates. lol Is there a link to the latest XP service pack install? I think I tried to find it, but since MS is supposedly not supporting XP anymore(?) I had trouble finding it.

Ok nevermind on the link. I found it, but I ran winver and its showing i have service pack 3 installed.

According to http://blogs.msdn.com/b/joshpoley/archive/2008/01/04/errors-007-facility-win32.aspx ........ that error means :-

Assembly Protection Error : The catalog for an assembly is not valid, or does not match the assembly's manifest.

ERROR_SXS_PROTECTION_CATALOG_NOT_VALID

Try this

Follow the steps under Method 1 in the link below to see what version of the Windows Installer you have:

If it's not 3.1.4000.2435 or higher, download and install the Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) from here :-

OK just confirmed that the version of the installer is:

3.1.4001.5512

I assume this means I have the correct version, and something else is going on to cause all these failed updates??

Do you have the Windows XP disk? It may save a lot of problems if you could start afresh rather than patching up a two year old installation.

And here I go thinking a six month install is outdated....

If I do not turn a machine on for a couple of months, there are bound to be issues such as network connection, printer connectivty, and the occasional update problem. First sign of trouble; out comes the install media. I have the least problems with a fresh install; least user input for connections of any kind and lots of room to create havoc.

Fresh install is not an option. No windows disk to be found. May be a moot point now actually..lol

This was just a pc my employer was giving to one of the girls here in the office who was having trouble with HER own pc. I think I may have her own pc fixed now, so this old one may not even be needed. Not to mention that this old pc only had a 500 meg stick in it and ran VERY slow. Still bugs me as to what's causing the updates to fail though. Thanks for all the help and advice!
