Running out of drive space - advice please [-pops-]

I've had two Western Digital drives fail in a similar way. I returned them and got replacements (with a very limited warranty - 2 months). These also failed just outside the warranty timing.

I promised myself then that I would not have another commercial external hard drive - and I haven't. I don't buy anything by Western Digital either.

What I do now is use a drive caddy and put my own, known, drive into it. I've done this a number of times with no failures so far. What's more, it can be cheaper.

pops, you've made the above comment before and when I tried placing internal drives into caddies I had nothing but problems. Since then I have been using WD ext drives without difficulty.

However I need more space. Files are getting to be of much better quality and consequently far larger than ever before. My T2 ext WD Mybook soon will be full.

So what drive(s) should I look for to accommodate my collection of quality data files. What caddy will be robust enough to house a large drive. Noise is a factor too - it must be quiet and not interfere with the sound of HiRes music.

Thanks pops, unfortunately the write up for the item you gave as an example gets rotten reviews [cheap, smelly, wrong cable, lose parts]. I am sure you are not using such rubbish yourself.

Sure, the Advantages are clear,

I just need a brand that is robust, and something that can sit in the corner of the dining room next to the PC.

The item I referred to was purely an example of the type of device I meant. It was not an endorsement of that particular brand or model.

Having said that, I have one of that brand of machine. It does not smell, there weren't any loose parts. It was up and running in a few minutes and is in daily use.

I agree it may not the the best looking thing to have in the dining room, though!

The drive enclosure I would have suggested for your particular positioning had a fine mesh case - thus self-cooling. This was from eBuyer but, unfortunately, they no longer stock them. They still have a good range, however and I don't think there is much to choose between them apart from being self powered from USB or from a mains adaptor - and their appearance.
