miseryguts
It crashed (not blue screen) whilst she was watching a youtube video & subsequently just displayed a black screen when it was turned on (no boot sound, logo etc) there was a cursor which you could move around though.Since then I've tried to re-install the OS (Windows 7 Ultimate x64) but it won't complete the installation reporting a: 0x80070570 error at around the 25% mark, if I subsequently try to re-install or repair using the same disk I get a blue screen crash: 0x0000003BI've also tried installing a version of Vista I had lying around, this completed the installation but wouldn't reboot back into windows giving a 0xc0000001 error.I have also tried formatting the Hard Drive which hasn't helped either. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could give me with this, my sister is getting a little desperate now. Thanks for listening. Belatucadrus
Here's a link to a Fix directions page, although if you've formated it and problems remain it could be a RAM issue and as many new laptops seem to have the primary ram as part of the MOBO could be a real problem. It may be worth trying Dr Web Curit to check for nasties, this works like one of the Linux live distros when you burn the iso to a CD so should work if it's set to boot from a CD. Hey thanks for the answer, I've tried the Dr Web Curit thing & it reported no errors.Could you tell me a little bit more about the RAM issue & what could potentially be done to fix it..? Many thanks. Belatucadrus
Not a lot I'm afraid, I've never had much luck fixing laptop hardware. On the plus side if it ran the DrWeb CD OK it looks as if the ram could be OK.Another tool that may be of use is Ultimate Boot CD a tool suite that comes with a variety of hardware testers including a memory check. If it can't identify a hardware issue then I'd run the reformat route again. I might even be pushed into trying a Linux distro like Ubuntu just to prove to myself that I could get it working.

The Ubuntu option is a good idea, I guess that way I can rule out major hardware issues.
miseryguts
Just tried installing the latest Ubuntu & it too crashed during the installation, with this in mind can anyone help in trying to diagnose the problem.. I really dont want to take it to the local repair shop as they've ripped us off before. Thanks.

Belatucadrus
As my usual diagnostic method on a PC of stripping it down to bare bones and adding one component at a time until you've identified the culprit is next to impossible with a laptop, I'd be pretty much forced to run the Ultimate boot CD diagnostics in the hope they'd find something.Have you tried booting from the Ubuntu disk instead of installing it, Ubuntu comes with some drive checks which may be of use.Bit of a long shot have you tried running a CD cleaner, I doubt it's having issues reading the disks but you could get lucky. As you can probably tell I'm running out of ideas.
Boris
Yes - as Belatucadrus suggests run the Live CD version of Ubuntu rather than installing it.
