Partition Magic 8 Advice Please...

Recommended Posts

Hi all ;),

After a recent reformat and re-install of Windows XP Home, and the loss of all my personal photos/ pictures/ emails etc etc. I wanted some advice on Partition Magic 8.

I have heard alot about it in the past, but never used it. What I want to do is this...

I have a 80GB HDD. I want to partition 10GB of space and be able to drag/drop files into the partition. I also don't want an OS on that partition, I just want to use it like a back-up device and be able to reformat in the usual way and recover my data from the extra drive.

Q...Will Partition Magic do this?

Q...Will I have to install an OS on the partition?

Q...Will the partition show up as another HDD in 'My Computer'? - eg. H:

Q...Are there usually any problems installing the software? - I will backup before anyway.

Thanx in advance....any help/ advice most welcomed...

;)

Look at partitions (see pic - The 3 with no volume names are Linux)

All created with Windows XP setup disk.

Q...Will Partition Magic do this? - Yes (...and i've never used it)

Q...Will I have to install an OS on the partition? - Nope.

Q...Will the partition show up as another HDD in 'My Computer'? - eg. H: - It sure will (see pic below)

Q...Are there usually any problems installing the software? - I will backup before anyway. - Well i've never installed it...

Thanx in advance....any help/ advice most welcomed... - An 80GB that is alot of space.

70GB for Windows XP...

10GB for the backup partition...

Great, if XP fails reinstall XP to partiton 70GB. Drag everything back to XP from the backup partition.

NOT so great, if the whole hard drive fails then you have LOST everything. So backup to CD/DVD would be wise. Maybe a small second hard drive?

1. PM 8 will do it no probs

2. No need for an OS on it

3. Partitions will be lettered before cd/dvd, My laptop has C= OS,D= Programs,E= backup images then CDRW as drive F.

4. Not had any problems with PM 6 or PM 7 on any of my systems.

Main problem tho, is if HD goes down you still lose all :(

Hope that helps.

i totally agree with mark here, what happens if for some reason the hard drive with the backup partition goes down?

it would be better to backup the vital stuff to cd every now and then.

sorry to powerless, i really should read things before posting.....

On second thoughts.

How about buying Drive image 7. (2002 is included)

Create 3 partitions.

C: Windows XP

D: Backup

E: Drive Image

Drag everything from C to D. Your docs etc...Downloaded progs.

Install XP (again) take an image of C and then you'll never have to reinstall. Just restore the image.

When you have your progs etc installed and are happy take another image.

If your ever going to try a new game, whatever program. Image C just in case. You'll also have your documents etc backuped in the image take at the time.

Again if the drive fails you will loose everuything but you can place the images on CD.
