jamesflatau
Do you know if I can run Windows XP securely on my pc after April 2014 please? Apparently Microsoft will no longer be deploying updates for XP after April. My pc cannot be upgraded to Windows 7 or Windows 8 due to processor limitations. If security can be compromised with XP, is the only solution to buy a new pc?Thanks, James Flatau
Boris
Unless there's a massive vulnerability that security software can't protect against, Windows XP should still have a long life in front of it. As long as security software, drivers and other applications have Windows XP versions of updates produced for them, the operating system can continue to be used securely and reliably. At some point you'll find that new hardware and software won't support the OS, and updates stop coming, but until that day you don't need to upgrade. I suggest you try reading this excellent article http://windowssecrets.com/top-story/securing-xp-pcs-after-microsoft-drops-support/ to get adequate background. Just type NO to the question about vans to see the full details. Alternatively read about the same subject here :-http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/software/1304965/when-windows-xp-support-ends-this-is-how-you-secure-your-pc-and-save-all-updates
Lamb Chop
Yep my sister who lives near Windsor has XP and says she has no intention to change over as hers too is lacking on being able to support W7 and who wants 8 Quite right too on links as sent them to her - thanks Boris Avast free no good for a start as I had to bumpo it when it stopped supporting XP last year. I started using MSE but it updates via windows update so no good for XP after 7.4.14 Shame eh because I still think after using Windows 7 is has some good features but I still think XP was better OS shame they didnt just update it. Should add its why i bought new computer as old one was 1Gig Ram and too tiny for W7 and my old one was coming up to 6 years old so ready as theysay for the off to computer heaven. Actually it is now sitting under my monitor as new one is a tower and cant be laid down sideways and used to having monitor at eye height. so I guess if you are happy and your computer is not yet ready for the old age pension so to speak - carry on unless you visit the dark side then buy new because there is where the nasties lurk.................dadadadadada coming to get your ID and raid your bank etc etc
Lamb Chop
Forgot too cant buy Windows 7 from retailers because of 8 which is a lemon has very little market share around 8% or so - you can get W7 with a new computer from builders so google where ever you live. I bought a family pack and used it on my old computer but didnt work well. Then ended up buying new and getting the bloke I found via EBay to put my 64 bit disk on it. Didnt work. Something wrong with both discs but they were genuine. M$ accepted both. Anyway rang him and he sold me a Windows 7 Premium OS disc $133 Aussie dollars, as I had bought one of his computers so legal. Its fine shouldnt have tried to save money eh! That's only way to get W7 i wasa told, although a friend also just bought a disc recently from another guy off of EBay legal too, not a copy but seller risked doing that. as only supposed as I said to use them on a new computer But always ways out there. And as XP still commands around 33% of the market today lots of people with same idea as woul dhave read about 8 by now like Vista a lemon they say. Some have bought new with 8 and then rolled back buying 7. The other thing is hang on and wait to buy new computer, stick with XP being careful - and thenwont be too long before M$ bring out new OS I reckon as they wont like their sales being so low nust be working on it right now. And as every other OS to date has been a lemon 7 not 8 is - chance are will be good one. Just a thought.
Boris
I started using MSE but it updates via windows update so no good for XP after 7.4.14 AFAIK - if you run XP which has MSE pre-installed on it before 8 April, you will still get updates for a further 12 months. Lamb Chop
Is there a link to this as my sister uses both XP and MSE and is worried about losing updates. And I use MSE with W7 - and see the updates for MSE on windows wich means not daily like say Avast etc. do. So I wonder if it is good enough. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Forgot too cant buy Windows 7 from retailers... Although XP is still used in many corporate environments, they are slowly being replaced by Windows 7 - not 8! Most major computer manufacturers still deliver W7 when ordered, although at a slightly higher price than W8.

Business gets the choice - I buy from Harvey Norman biggest in Oz and they cant and haven't been able to get a disc to sell of Windows 7 since Windows 8 was released even said a recall of unsold or so I was told. And also on E Bay the computer guys there can only sell with a new computer, not alone for upgrade fm XP or Vista. Unless yu can score one who will as they say not allowed or lose their status with M$ and yes I expect any left over returns or even new discs made up for corporates they buy in bulk. The new computers coming into retailers are new OS whatever it is and once they sell out of the old one - hard cheese buy from small private builders. It was exacty the same when they brought out Vista. I ended up having to buy a new computer then to get XP and of the big manufacturers only Dell was still loading them. M$ want us peons to buy the new PS systems - I reckon as the patsies to iron out the wrinkles. Would not surprise me that at all.

rong
Looks to me like this is a big opportunity for the Linux platforms to make there OS's easier to use as the only other option Microsoft are offering is 8.1 that by most accounts is rubbish, except for a few instances
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
I have seen many people talking about Linux since the disaster that is called Windows 8. However, are there any applications that run on Windows, and also on Linux? I know that a lot of people use their computers only to surf the net or do email, but what about the millions that actually run some real applications. Lamb Chop
Is there a new OS in the offing? Or too early Vista was only around 2 years as not popular. thanks for links Boris. They do say atuomatic updates on MSE but since having 7 only find them on updates as updates so not automatic in reality? Like with SAS it updates as soon as I boot up and sometimes 2nd time later on in the evening if still working or maybe surfing. If they cant get people to buy 8 or 8.1 now latest - why not reissue W7 I would but then I dont have Bill's bucks.............. did the lottery big one got $12.95 so off to celebrate ha ha.
