Damo Posted October 17, 2003 Report Share Posted October 17, 2003 I've been sorting out a friends pc, including changing cd drives, putting new memory in ...so on.....He had a lot of crashes and slowdowns and he couldn't figure it out!Then I saw he had a PCI internal Modem, which had no drivers installed on it, as he has Bband I took it out.All seems to be running fine now, but could that have been one of the reasons for the crashes and lock ups?? I know in device manager it had the ol' yellow exclamation point next to it........but not anymore...now that its out!!!As you can see my speciallity is not hardware!!! :PcheerzDamo Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

moon Posted October 17, 2003 Report Share Posted October 17, 2003 Possibly, but I run ISDN along with dial-up with no problems. I just have to set my browsers to 'Never dial out'. Damo Posted October 17, 2003 Author Report Share Posted October 17, 2003 All was well when I took the modem out, I reinstalled the OS aswell. I had it running for 5 hours without a problem.Then he took it home, plugged all HIS stuff into it and suddenly it wouldn't boot up, just hung on the splash screen.We went through a few options on the phone, I told him to take his mouse out and try booting without it....it worked fine.......so....now I'm even more confused! Its ever since he's had it there have been problems!Thats why I never usually sell anything to friends at work! Meaning that even Ctrl-alt-del didn't work, no keyboard and no mouse... nothing, then you can safely say it is a hardware problem. ( He did give me a lot of technical detail and I must have made the right noises in the right places because he went of for ages..... but I'm afraid all that info has fallen out of my head!! :( ).If, however the system is locking up, but you can do Ctrl-alt-del then it may be a software problem.............. mark2 Posted October 18, 2003 Report Share Posted October 18, 2003 I had a similar problem recently, mouse plugged in, wouldn't boot, someone else was going to look at it, after 2mths I got my hands on it again opened it up, pressed on all the plugs inside.
