1, Cost, most versions of linux can be got for free off the net. The basic source code is free under GNU public

licence

2, Faster,

3, Security, fewer virii(uses) and trojans currently attack linux.

4, less bloat, a la windows, you only install what you need or want. you don't have to have everything installed.

5, Doesn't try to phone home when you play a cd!

there is a version of linux available http://www.knoppix.net/ that will run without installling to your HD in fact if you have enough ram it will happily run without a HD in the comp, only uses HD as a swap file anyway.

I wouldn't say that Knoppix on cd is an alternative to XP as an o/s but the other major players, Redhat and Mandrake are.

Full office programs, Cd burning, mediaplayer all have an equivalent in linux. there is a steep learning curve associated with the changeover from windows to linux. Things still need setting up in linux whereas windows will set them up automatically. I had to figure out how to set up my CD burner before burning.

However if you have ever spent time tinkering in the registry or using Dos there is a similarity.

Bug fixes and security issues tend to be found and fixed rather faster than with windows as the source code is freely available, many more people tend to work towards a solution rather than one company.

Also with M$ trying to tie the chip to the OS, so you cannot make any changes to the hardware, Linux may be the only option sould you want to upgrade

http://doomworld.com/forums/doom3/messages/11665.shtml

To highlight the main point: Microsoft is working with hardware manufacturers to redesign computers themselves (!) just to work with their new operating system

DEVICE CONNECTIVITY: "The system does not allow end-user access to expansion bus cards. This means users will no longer routinely open their PCs to add peripherals

and also http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/tcpa-faq.html with fritz chips
