Yes - you need both to be safe.

If you read some magazine reviews you will see that while most AV software claims to cover both, some aren't that good at it so a two tier approach is safest. Particularly if you like file sharing and searching the more dubious areas of the net.

Anti-virus is specific. However, you can argue that it is more than just virus (...that which duplicates itself...)when it concerns computers.

Anti-malware is more general. As such it includes anti-virus, anti-spyware, worms trojans...
