IE hangs, so does AIM, Auto-Protect suspect

Recommended Posts

Windows XP SP1 fully updated, running ZA with NAV 2004.

When using the Microsft Internet Explorer there is a hang from the moment I click "go", to the page completing it's loading. I have no access to the IE's functions, Back, File, Favorites etc, once the page has finished loading, access is restored. This is very irritating...

AIM also hangs when it is loggng on and when trying to select any of it's functions.

All other applications do not seem affected.

Troubleshoot:

I defragged, check disked, deleted temporary internet files/cookies, ran sfc /scannow to repair IE, looked in event viewer for any clues - there was none, all working ok according to the reports.

Scanned for a virus using err NAV and also an online scan, also scanned for spyware etc - my system is clean!

Ran services.msc to disable uneeded services - reduced my services, but the problem remains.

512MB of RAM to play with of which 250 is left - i have some other stuff running.

2400 XP athlon to which CPU usage is currently 99% System idle processes.

About 215GB of hard disk space to play with - 2 hard drives, partitioned.

Virtual memory is set at - initial 768MB an max at 1536MB.

Ran msconfig and to stop all loading program (i only have 2) and my problem did not appear.

Just loaded ZA and again problem did not appear.

Loaded NAV and the problem occured, i decided to disable "Auto-Protect" and hey presto my problem vanished.

So i think it has to do with the auto-protect feature of NAV.

Workaround:

Disable auto-protect. Not a very good workround as it kicks me auto-protect offline.

Solution:? Ideas people...

1. Look in your virus definitions directory, normally under c:\program files\common files\symantec shared\virusdefs\ (where may be 20031008.020).

2. See if there are a bunch of 0-byte temp files with the name of ????NAV~.tmp

If so, nuke these temp files, see if that solves the problem, and let us know!

A few things they seem to be trying

Last page of that thread suggests problem is XP pro and users

So to test that theory;

I logged as an Administrator,

Changed the security settings for the VirusDefs directory to give full control to the "users" group.

Logged out, and logged in again as a "limited" user.

Tried browsing and it seems to work OK now (I only did it a few minutes ago, and I have not tested it thoroughly yet )

Since my only available XP PC is by mean of Remote Desktop through a VPN tunnel, I can't be absolutely sure it is fixed. Anyone can try and confirm this please ?

For the Symantec guys:

It looks like those TMP files are created and owned by the "Administrators" users group. I suspect NAV is trying to delete them under the current user access permissions and fails to delete them correctly. It is not a good idea to create temporary files in such a critical directory anyway... (Maybe there is an entry in the registry or in a file where we could change the location of those temporary files ?)
