Michael Howard, isn't he the one who famously, or infamously, refused point blank about 17 times to answer Jeremy Paxman's straightforward question on Newsnight a few years ago. The Tories deserve him, he'll win the election (for Labour) singlehandedly.

This was shown again last night - highly amusing and damaging to a potential leader of a once respected political party. I feel the "once respected" will continue to be the case.

It was also made much of that he is of Transylvanian parentage so Doris Karloff's remark that he has "something of the night about him" is even more apt.

Talking of Doris Karloff, how about her as leader? Since she's had her makeover she's come across in a much better light and, let's face it, she can't be worse than the last few they've had.

I always had the impression of a nice (and for a politician, decent)man. He just lacked fire and personality. I cannot quite take to Michael Howard, I get a slight impression of oiliness and sneakiness. I think unfortunately they are going to have to dig deep to find someone. Ckarke is too left wing and too pro Europe he should join the Lib dems.

It's almost unbelievable that you Poms, having seen what the Tories did last time around ( and Howard was a prime mover), having seen what they are capable of doing to each other, and having seen how they all jump through hoops when financial backers wave their wads, having seen all that you can still consider them a force in politics at all. Your ' democracy' is bought and paid for. Any sixth form debating group could wipe the floor with your current opposition party. Why are they still there ? Backers millions, that's why. Why isn't it headline news ? I've just seen , with my own eyes, a financial sponsor demand, and get, a change of opposition leadership. This is Third World stuff !! What about the poor bloody tory supporters who voted for IDS ? Nobody is paying their backhanders, that's what. Your political system is, on the evidence recently presented to the world, disgraceful.

Politics now has lost its passion. Centralisation is all that matters now, who the hell would now want to go into politics? wheres the fire in ya belly gone. Couldn't stand the woman but Mrs M at least stood for what she believed and said so, if you agreed you voted for her, if you didn't you didn't.

Apart from the infamous interview with Paxman, Newsnight and Question time have turned into a sound-wall where so called politicians sound off. Speaking of Paxman, the interview he did the other night with the chairman of the Con party...he asked her a number of times if IDS had charisma... CHARISMA what the hell has that got to do with anything~??

How can there be a credible opposition when politics is going the same way as Premiership football....sack the manager after SEVEN matches??

And another thing, how can there be an opposition when both party's have the same polcies..cept in the detail??

There will never be a right/left wing party in power again in this country so the politicians are fighting over who can achieve the best with what there is. What a boring prospect.

You have to feel a bit sorry for the torries..where are they to go now? all the avenues have been sealed, theres no BIG polices left..or right ^_^

Democracy has reached a situation were the lowest bid has to be accepted so corners are cut and standards drop.

Rant over...for now.

Spikeychris, Politics is quite a lucrative little sideline for lawyers, Q.Cs and anyone else who wants some pin money.

George Galloway (he of the Gorgeous Type) didn't buy a Townhouse in downtown London AND a rather splendid Villa in Portugal on his MPs salary, it will be interesting to see the outcome of his libel suit against them as aver he got some of his loot from the "indefatigable" Saddam.

Of course, you can pretty well almost double your income by employing your relatives as Secretaries and Researchers.

Who was it said "a nice little earner"?

ENTER THE ELECTRONIC REFERENDUM

Cor, it took ages to do that . :D

Vote according to your grasp of situations and the speed of your rig. Influence fishing quotas in Aberdeen, the height of leylandi on Canvey Island, wellie thicknesses on the moors, name Dover's new immigrant trebuchet , get a finger on the pulse of LIFE, not the corpse of two -and-a -half-party politics. :D
