[RESOLVED] -Jut a couple of XP tips

You can add another tab to XP called 'details' that lists advanced information about the current device you are looking at. To permanently display the 'details' tab in each device properties box...

Click Start/Control Panel,

Double click 'System'

Click the Advanced tab

Click 'Environment Variables'

Locate the 'System variables' frame

Click New

In the Name label, type: "DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS"

In the Value label type 1 and then click OK, OK and OK

Now when you open the device manager, double click a device of your choice and you have a new details tab with a shed load of info

Turning Off Indexing Speeds Up Windows XP..

Windows XP keeps a record of all files on your hard disk to try and improve searching speed. There is a downside though as your machine will have to index all of the files, so if you don't use search very much you can disable this feature

Open my computer

Right click your hard drive and select properties.

At the bottom of the window you will see "Allow indexing service to index this disk for faster searches," uncheck this and click then click ok.

A new window will pop up and select apply to all folders and subfolders. Once complete, it takes a few more minutes to make sure that indexing is now switched off.

May be because I am using fat32. Need this because I am networking with a 98 machine and traffic has to be both ways.

I've got 2 machines monkeyhanger, one does have the indexing service listed, the other one hasn't :blink:

Yeah, I always assume that XP is installed on NTFS. The Windows XP Indexing Service only runs on NTFS partitions and/or hard drives that are local and does not run on or index network drives and FAT32 hard drives.

You can run XP on NTFS and 98 on FAT32 with no problems at all.

Yes I know, but I need the 98 machine to have access to all of the x\p machine and vice versa.

As you can see I do share a few files. :D

monkey, it is concerning that you share your c: drive....what if unknown fingers suddenly accidently delete the system folder from a networked machine???

one does hope that there are certain restrictions in place!!

No problems on the duel boot 98 - x\p machine. My 15 year old lad is extremely competent with computers.
