Common Client Core

Recommended Posts

I have a number of Norton programs installed: Anti-Virus, Ghost and Personal Firewall. Recently I tried their Anti-Spam but found that it was not very friendly with my Eudora mail program. I did a normal uninstall via the control panel and returned the program for credit. A few days later when I went on line and attempted to use Symantecs Live Update for my remaining programs I downloaded and installed a number of updates but I got an error message that said it could not complete all of the download. When I clicked on "Details" for an explanation I got the following:

Windows 2000 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4

Common Client Core 2.0.1

Could not find installation path for at least one component.

Do you think this is a problem with W2K that resulted from the recent program removal? If so, how can I repair this path?

Symantec's canned response is that if you have any difficulty, unload all of your Symantec programs, register entries, left over Symantec files, etc. etc. and then reinstall it all using about 20 restarts, bit by bit. I sure would like to avoid this!

Thanks for any help.

unload all of your Symantec programs,

That seems like good advice to me, kenk. :D

I had nothing but trouble with Norton and eventually dropped them in favour of freeware ( AVG, Outpost Firewall) and all my problems went away. I also saw a performance boost. I'm currently wondering who I like the least so I can give them my Norton personal firewall for Christmas.

Sorry to sound bitter, but Norton support was so poor that I vowed to take every opportunity to tell it like it is. Go freeware.

Well, after that I'm not so sure  , but....

I am the happy user of SOME Norton products. Anti-Virus and the balance of Systemworks except Backup. Don't have their firewall, I have XP, irrespective of what it says under my Avatar. :D

Now, I also agree it is a pain if it needs re-installing, and I got an update that required a disk format

That was a year ago, and it's been beautiful ever since. :)

I'm not promoting their product, just letting you know a different perspective.

Hey Moon, I tried AVG but it locked up a huge section of my hard drive, and couldn't be defragged. Is that normal, or was my prog a bug.

Dunno, George, but that is the first negative feedback I've ever seen about AVG. ( Edit; What were you defragging with ? )

Sure, Norton must be useful for some but it clogged me up when I was starting out. I guess it just wasn't newbie friendly. ( and neither were Symantec :D )

I also had a problem a while back with script control in the anti-virus, it stopped the program from recognizing instructions from it's own control panel. It used scripts to instruct itself, but blocked them as it saw them as malicious.

Tried both Diskkeeper (lite) and another one (O..defrag) can't remember the name, started with an o.

Uninstalled AVG, it disappeared. :dontgetit:

So, I re-installed Norton Systemworks 2002, license was still good, so, off I went again. It's been really good ever since. I don't run the monitoring programs, I pretty much know what's going on at any given moment any way.

I guess my question wasn't as clear as it should have been. What I would like to know is if anybody is familiar with a windows "Common Client Core" file.

I did not get the message that prompts the use of the solution suggested by spikeychris (Hi, good to talk with you again) and know that Symantec is not a cure all, but it does do everything I need and I really don't want to switch to AVG or anything else.

Their Ghost, Anti-Virus, Firewall and ACT! all work perfectly. It was their "Anti-Spam" that ruined the stew.

When I follow Symantecs suggestions for this specific problem it tells me to erase a file "Live Update Downloads" under documents and settings. I did that, twice, rebooted, tried Live Update again, and got the same error. I have not brought myself to totally uninstall the four programs with all their baggage as their tech support FAQ at their web site suggests.

So I am hoping that I have done something to a Win file. That is, IF there is a Win file that forms some type of Common Client Core?

Does anyone know anything about such a file?

As always, thanks for any help you can give me.
