It sums up my view of the "festive" season:"Or you could do as I do and think very carefully about Christmas cards, the sentiments behind them and do you really mean the greetings you are sending with the card?I don't think I'm the re-incarnation of Scrooge but several years ago I had a re-think about Christmas and all its false jollity. It is a time for my family - my partner, my two sons and their partners and my grandchildren. My generosity with them knows (almost) no bounds but as for a mass mailshot of greetings cards to people of whom I know little and care about even less, forget it.Outside of the immediate family my Christmas card list amounts to three people - hardly worth setting up an Excel database for as I can remember and handwrite their cards.This brings up another point - printed or computer generated addressed envelopes, even more so printed label envelopes strike of the production line and all the "care and sentiment" which that involves.As for carol singers, we get the local Round Table coming along with an almost antique Dansette style record player on the back of a lorry playing total distortions of carols and "jolly" round table members dressed as Santa collecting money. Most of the members are multimillionaires themselves and could easily slip a few quid in without the embarrassment of begging on people's doorsteps. This last comment could just as well apply to all these talented and talent-free "celebrities" and royalty who put their names to charitable events on TV and such like. Stop embarrassing all concerned in having to listen to/watching you and pay up yourself - you know you can afford it.As for other carol singers coming to the door, we have a very large dog with a very loud bark. He usually does the trick.Having said all that, have a nice Christmas, Hanukah or whatever you celebrate at this time of the year - I wouldn't wish it any other way at any time. We all have troubles in our lives - lucky if you don't ...................I send a lot of cards to past friends that have moved away or whatever and we catch up on our lives then. My Daughter and her boyfriend, (I refuse to use the description partner), together with our lovely Granddaughter, and my son will all be there with 'er indoors and me. I never want much in the way of presents, I get more pleasure in giving them, especially to little Zoe. It's a busy day for me cooking the lunch, but then we all relax for the afternoon. I get a lot of pleasure in creating all my own Christmas cards on the computer, and everyone is slightly different, and YES I do mean what I say on them. As you can well imagine with the cost of double sided photo quality 210 grm card, plus the ink I am NOT saving money, but as I say I enjoy doing it, and all the family and friends seem happy to receive them. For New Years Eve, our family all visit their own friends, while 'er indoors and me get together with three more couples. We all take it in turn to be hosts providing the main course of the meal, and the other three couples all take turns at providing cheese, two puddings, and a starter. This year I will provide the starter. Let each one decide what they want to do. If some wish to wallow in misery so be it, it's their prerogative to do so. For me I enjoy the family get together, and wouldn't want it any other way. Each to his/her own. I don't condemn those who want to wallow in misery, and would ask them to allow me and mine to enjoy our festivities in our way.HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE, OR A MISERABLE ONE, WHICHEVER YOU CHOOSE!. There is no compulsion on my part for anyone to be here at Christmas time - completely voluntary.Just because I may come across here as an old misery, my grand-daughters (5 and 10 year olds), sons (39 and 33), respective other halves (35 and 33) are most certainly not and don't see me like that either.As I remarked earlier, I wish everyone the best wishes at all times of year, not just at some season manufactured in awe of the great god, profit.
