Guest Grim Reaper
The British armed forces of the future will be able to act quickly, accurately and decisively to new security threats, Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon told MPs today.Presenting the Defence White Paper to Parliament, the Secretary of State said that new security threats are emerging and the military need to prepare for tomorrow's strategic environment."The proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction and the threat posed by international terrorism, coupled with the consequences of failed or failing states, present us with very real and immediate challenges."Resources must be directed at those capabilities that are best able to deliver the range of military effects required, whilst dispensing with those elements that are less flexible."The White Paper presents a requirement for the military to be structured and equipped for rapid deployment on smaller operations, often alongside allied forces. There will be an increasing role for battlefield technology and precision weaponry. The Defence Secretary also responded to a new report on the UK's military operations in Iraq from the National Audit Office, which concluded that the campaign was "a significant military success".Mr Hoon said he was delighted to see further recognition for the "outstanding ability and dedication of our servicemen and women". "I am pleased that the NAO have recognised the impressive standard of the equipment we procure, the effectiveness of equipment support, successes in logistics and the speed and flexibility of our operational planning." - 10 Downing StreetWith the war on terrorism and the continued threat thereby posed, is it really wise to be restructuring and reducing our armed forces?? Tankus
If anything.... in view of our govs. stance in toeing it to the line, to the US foreign policy , it should be increased .....Bloody disgrace that our troops (volunteers) went out there without full kit ..Body armour ,boots , and desert camouflage is bloody basics , for christ sakes ...why are not the ink pushers in charge of logistics up for treason ...In order to cut costs they are using "last minute" no reserve ,stock ordering from manufacturers ......OK if you need a pen (from multiple choice of sources) but not if you need a tank (18 month lead time ...min) ....absolute disgrace that has resulted in deaths........If that $%@& cheesy is going to put our troops at risk for his own political kudos ...he should at the very least give them the means to protect themselves......This is even worse that the fact that we went into Iraq....The whole reason was (supposedly ) over WMDS....Yet the tanks went in with no anti biological filters , or the troops with 4000 gas analysers short ....and only 40% frontline troops with full NBC kit ....does this mean that cheesey knew it was rubbish all along ....... Shame.....and Im being polite... There should be jail sentences at the very minimum over this .......But as usual it will be seen as a positve thing under a cheesy spin ...... -pops-
The proliferation of Weapons of Mass DestructionExcuse me????? Where????????? When?????????In order to cut costs they are using "last minute" no reserve ,stock ordering from manufacturersThis system was the "buzz" way of doing things in manufacturing in the late 80's - early 90's. It was known by the jolly acronym JIT - just in time. What is never conceived in this philosophy is that someone, somewhere MUST carry stock - as long as it is not you then all is fine. The whole concept is discredited in a number of concerns now after JIT became TFL (too f*****g late) - an idea that seems to have passed over our military and other official bodies.Mohamed al Fayed is quoted today as saying that he wouldn't employ John Prescott even as a doorman at Harrods. As far as I'm concerned I wouldn't employ any of our "leaders" in any job at all. The bona fides of Cheesey were revealed the recently when his CV for parliamentary candidature was published. Silly sod can't even spell his own name, calling himself "Glair". A definition of glair is "A viscous substance resembling egg white" - ?slimeball? How apt. :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
