doug
I'm running AVG Free, ZoneAlarm and check with Spybot and Adaware frequently. but I'm definitely getting slower. The Pitstop check is giving me checkered flags everywhere. Guest ellas
doug why dont you turn off some of the visual effects.
doug
Thanks for reply. It seems to be more sticky than a while back. When I first went to XP I noticed that the Soltaire game was very slow at throwing the cards away after a finish, but wasn't too bothered. In addition to the "sticky feel" I now note that during Freecell moving a set of cards to a different column and now can see the cards going up to the freecells in sequence as they are being moved over. Before it was virtually instantaneous. Not very tech or scientific but it's noticeable. No hardware changes at all since the changeover - am getting 512 MB DDR for Xmas :D Don't know where the kontiki came from I'll bin that if I can. doug
This is all good stuff. At present I have 256 M Sdrm running ay 100 Mhz fsb with a Duron 800 Mhz. C:\ has 10 GB free running on 100 ATA? Virtual memory left to XP to get on with. Hope I've described it properly.
mark2
256mb ram you'll find an increase in performance with that extra 512mb.you could have a look at the Black Viper page to see if you can cut down on the services running.May be worthwhile adjusting your swap/paging file to a fixed size, will see if I can remember how to  back shortly
mark2
to adjust virtual memory go to my computer > properties> advanced > performance settings > advanced > virtual memory > change, select custom size > set initial and max size to the same would suggest 3 x ram 768mb for you see if you notice any improvement. doug
Have changed the display to the classic mode - never did like the "gangrene" coloured grass, and have set the virtual memory to 768 MB following your suggestion. Too early to report but I feel a little brisker already. Have just set a restore point to be on the safe side for the next stages. This is such a great place. djohn
Hi Doug, Not sure about the other applications in XP but in the card games, have you by any chance set the options to "Show animations" this will give the appearance of slowing the game down, as each card and movement is displayed. If you have, then un-check from "Options and the cards will fly up. :dummies:

djohn
Hi Doug, in solitaire it's on the toolbar under games/options. Remove the tick from "Outline dragging" and in my favourite "Freecell. Toolbar/games/options, and place a tick in "quick play, no animations" :)
doug
Thanks for the reply DJ. Was able to carry out the Freecell change but the Solitaire was already at the setting you suggested. Just tried a game of Solitaire and at the end I could have spat the cards faster. Very puzzled.
Guest spikeychris
You could tweak HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{E7528BE3-F784-4773-97F3-D8F7E1B9803C a bit. Are you using TCPIP\UpperFilters?
doug
Err pardon? I usually smoke Condor. Honestly, I haven't a clue. Please post a translation. 1zhelp
Guest spikeychris
Keep smoking your Condor Doug, the Maximum Transmission Unit size on your machine will not benefit from deleting the upper filters. Its mainly for networks. Increasing MTU fires data a little faster on a network. My fault
