Metronomy Sets The Pace In PC Advertising

TV style advertising on home PCs set to revolutionise the marketplace

The vision of home PC and internet access 'for everyone who wants it' is set to become reality with the launch today (Thursday 11 December) of Metronomy.

The company, a new venture, working with the world's leading technology and media groups including IBM, Omnicom and Interpublic, has taken the accepted tradition of scheduled advertising breaks across independent TV and Radio, and applied it to the home PC in a unique and compelling way.

Metronomy is offering a free IBM PC to every household in the UK (subject to certain terms and conditions), if they accept up to three minutes of advertising for every hour of computer use.

Upon receipt of their free PC (first deliveries will take place in Feb/March 2004), each household creates individual user profiles and completes an on-screen questionnaire, designed to provide Metronomy with information about the family's structure and preferences. The company's innovative 'Desktop Marketing' technology then allows advertisers to show fully interactive TV quality ads to households (and even specific users) who precisely match the brand's target markets, ensuring that subscribers receive ads that are likely to be of interest to them.

New advertising is supplied in the form of a monthly CD, which must be installed in order for the PC to continue operating. Subscribers may use either 56k or broadband connection.

From today, Metronomy is accepting registrations for the first 200,000 PC's (at www.metronomy.com or by phone on 08717 505040) from interested householders who fulfill certain basic criteria.

The venture, the brainchild of Metronomy ceo John Thornhill, and supported by co-founders Tim Hoole and Jacco Van Seventer, is the first of its kind worldwide.

John Thornhill, ceo of Metronomy commented on the venture, saying; "Metronomy believes that the offer of a free PC will benefit millions of UK households. We are delighted to be working with some of the world's leading media and technology companies including IBM, Omnicom and Interpublic, who's support has been instrumental in developing this ground-breaking initiative."

Martin Wright, marketing director of TBWA/GGT, added; "From an advertising perspective, Metronomy's desktop marketing concept represents the convergence of interactive TV-style advertising with the targeting and segmentation capabilities of Direct Marketing. "

"Given the extent to which home PC's have penetrated our lives, computer-based advertising is only now beginning to show it's true potential. This is a major leap forward and we are very excited to be involved."

Q: I don't have a home PC and therefore I don't currently have an ISP? Does this mean I'm not eligible?

A: A connection to the internet is a condition of the agreement, though this can be set up when the PC is first installed using the recommend ISP's that will be pre-loaded on the PC.

I suppose this means if you already have internet you can use that connection. It's a very interesting idea

Monkey... :(

5) The principle applicant should be 18 or over, and provide a home telephone number. We will conduct a security check linking you to the address given. Under certain circumstances, you may be requested to provide alternative proof of ID. This offer is restricted to one PC per household.

No doubt someone will come up with a hack to stop it from being deactivated. Then again, it may well fizzle out like the FREE broadband fiasco.
Get the computer.

Turn it on, Insert Linux CD's. Reboot PC with linux CD in the drive, partion and format hard drive, install linux, configure it, then insert their spyware CD as instructed, click the aforementioned .exe file, giggle at error on screen, continue on happily with whatever you would like to do.

from the same thread at another site :D
