antidote Posted January 5, 2004 Report Share Posted January 5, 2004 hi allwell seems my new harddrive is on the way out again only had it bout a monthstarted to make a loud thumbing noise always seems to be on the night timei do a scan disk reports back no errors or bad sectors i even use the boot diskfor my hd which i dl of the site an scand my hd an found nothing wrong i justdont know what it is thats causeing my hds to go like this got through about9 now in less than 12months an stll my internet wont disconnect properley sumtimesicon will just freeze in the tool bar could my modem or modem software becauseing damage to my hds or could a fault with a montior cause damagethanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

moon Posted January 5, 2004 Report Share Posted January 5, 2004 If you have a multimeter take off the power connector to the drive and test the supply. Red to black should give you +5v and yellow to black should give you +12v. A 'Y' connector in the supply might divide the supply and underpower the drive. Have you tried taking any of them back to see what the supplier says about this catalogue of disasters? Are these drives claimed to be new?New drives have a one year manufacturers guarantee (at least). A "reliable" supplier would honour that and also offer some explanation as to what is happening in your continuing saga of drive failures.I have used dozens of Maxtor drives and found them all completely reliable, running for years without a problem. moon Posted January 5, 2004 Report Share Posted January 5, 2004 Vopt is the best, imo, and works best in safe mode. You could also download Diskeeper Lite, for free, and run that a few times. I should uninstall it afterwards though as I think it's a bit of a resource hog, whether it's on 'auto' or not. You can always reinstall it from file when you need it again. In my pitifully narrow experience it's always best to use more than one defragger. Like registry cleaners, one will always find something that another misses. :) PS. There's no way Vopt is gonna take 3-5 days. 'Easy Cleaner' is a safe little tool ( in the right hands :D ) and it's free from Toni ArtsSave your download to a safe folder ( I created one in 'My Documents' and called it 'Quarantine' ) Check the download with your virus scanner then install it.
