No... a debit card is a bit like a cheque book, except it gets swiped in a machine instead of you writing a cheque. So yes, you do have to have money in the bank to be debited... but no, these days there is no charge for using it. Although the banks did try to introduce charges for the hole in the wall money machines.. but that seems to have gone by the wayside now.

Debit cards were supposed to work like a cheque just be simpler. You hand over the card and the money goes out of your account 3 days later. Switch/Solo are different in that the money goes out when you use it. Most leading highstreet (and online) banks will give a debit card to anyone 18+ and some 16+. This card is linked directly to your current account so you do not have to worry about paying any bills.

A credit card doesn't have to be with the same bank as your current account. You will be given a credit limit which is the same as an overdraft. Spend up to the limit and you will be ok, spend more than it and you will be fined. Each month you will be sent a bill that you can either pay in full or part of (there will be a minium payment). If you don't pay the bill in full you will be charged interest.

Some credit cards do have an annual fee and for that you get many benefits and sometimes a lower rate of interest. If you are planning on paying it in full each month (you can set up a direct debit to do this so don't have to worry about doing anything!) you will pay no more than had you paid cash.

If you have a bank account then speak to that bank and see what they offer.

Barclaycard is one I use that has various online protection extras that you may want to look at.

This is not finanical advice!

Nearly all online payments can be done using a Switch card. Solo card were for those under 18 and I think used different technology so are less widely accepted.

A visa debit card is perhaps the most widely accepted form of payment (do mastercard do debit cards???) and you should be able to get one with a current account with any bank.

A credit card should always be used for transactions over £100 (esp. online) as you are then protected by consumer credit laws if things go wrong.

You are right, it is very easy to get into debt with a credit card (it's how banks make money) so unless you are very careful with money (or have loads of it) is wise to avoid. My lovely bank kindly increased my limit to 3 times my income!!

As Sir rad said...

Solo is less widely accepted...

Still forget when i go to my tesco's buy food pay with card, then go to get petrol, find they dont take solo in the petrol station, run accross the car park to cash point.....

yet garages in the middle of no-where do, yet they could end up at more of a loss than tesco's!?!?!?

yes tony is right a mastercard or visa will cost nothing if you pay it all off at the end of the month, plus with a credit card if you buy something just after getting your monthly statement you have 3/4 weeks before you have to pay to avoid paying interest, useful for bigger purchases.

yep but as long as you pay at the end of each month there is no charge,I know someone using a credit card for 5 years who has never paid any interest as hes always paid in full when the statement comes,I know its easy to spend on them but you can in practice use a credit card interest free with no charges for as long as you like.

15 years ! :D and my current Halifax Classic Cashback Mastercard earns me a 1% cash rebate annually on whatever I buy using the card :)

With my "careful" attitude I/we buy almost everything with it - our petrol, food, clothes, whatever. I clear the full balance on the last possible day so as not to incur any interest (done automatically by direct debit) - the money has been sitting in my savings account since pay day - earning me interest and its then moved into our current account to cover the direct debit ........ and then in January I get a nice 1% cash "present" credited to the account which helps me pay for Christmas. :)

Credit cards - ideal ! - if like me - you have to watch the pennies
