don't ask Posted February 16, 2004 Report Share Posted February 16, 2004 Original problem was :I was using IE/OE 5.00 but when I did Send/Receive – e-mails started to download but when it had received about 16 or so program stopped responding. I deleted those received messages (they are all spam anyway!). When I had Internet Explorer loaded at the same time, then that program ran very, very, very slow, so I disconnected (I’m on dial up) and tried to either restart or shut down but usually ended up with a Blue Screen (fatal exception has occurred at 0028:C0031B13) and got completely hung and hit the reset button. That was the pattern over many attempts over 3 or 4 days to download e-mails.Decided to upgrade to Version 6 today in the hope that would sort out the problem, as I had been unable to do a repair on the old version and all went smoothly.However, everything is exactly the same as it was before, and I am very frustrated now! :( :angry: Because I usually get a load of spam stuff daily (not all is downloaded because of the rules I set in Outlook Express), the box now says it is receiving a list of 430 messages which it filters down to 196 that it tries to download, but the program still stops responding once it has retrieved about 16 or 17 of them. As the days go by surely the list of messages is going to get longer and longer as I can’t attend to them. The mail server will surely choke itself with all these messages! :o Oh dear! What do I do? don't ask Posted February 16, 2004 Author Report Share Posted February 16, 2004 Downloads start off at 'normal' speed until 16 or 17 have downloaded then it seizes up.Browsing only slows down once Outlook Express has downloaded those 16 or 17 e-mails.How would I be able to tell when the mailbox is full? nellie2 Posted February 16, 2004 Report Share Posted February 16, 2004 It sounds to me like you may have an email with a large attachment that is blocking things. Are you able to access your mail on the web to have a look to see exactly what is there?If your mail box is full you usually get an email from your provider.-pops- suggestion of using mailwasher is a good one. That way you can delete all the spam directly from the server and not waste precious time downloading it.I use mailwasher and wouldn't be without it........ in fact I like it so much I paid for the full version!!!! don't ask Posted February 16, 2004 Author Report Share Posted February 16, 2004 Don't know if I have a e-mail notification of full mailbox from ISP (can't really retrieve much at the moment :( I have just finished downloading Mailwasher - thanks folks - and am printing out the tutorial & etc as we speak - good job I had loads of scrap paper only used on one side - have umpteen pages to read through.Will load it later tonight once I've read the bumph (and watched Eastenders :lol: )(I had gradually come to the realisation that something could be causing a blockage - thanks for bearing with me and providing moral support :) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

don't ask Posted February 16, 2004 Author Report Share Posted February 16, 2004 :D :lol: Ooooh - just encountered a hic-cup - one of the e-mails from my son has an attachment I really need but it says :"OE removed access to the following unsafe attachment in your mail " - and gives the name of the .zip file he attached - wonder how I can get access to it? In the Options window, on the Security tab, locate the Virus Protection section. Uncheck the "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" box. andsome Posted February 17, 2004 Report Share Posted February 17, 2004 I have found Mailwasher to be extremely useful in the past, but it NEVER intercepts anything now, for the simple reason that there is now NOTHING to intercept. When my spam started to average over a hundred a day, I contacted my ISP and changed my e-mail address to something that is more unlikely to be found by an auto dialling spammer. -pops- Posted February 17, 2004 Report Share Posted February 17, 2004 The problem with changing your email address is the bother of informing all your contacts about the change.The real thing is, though, that you shouldn't be necessary to do any of these things. What is happening with all these wonderful (I use that word very advisedly) new laws now in force that were going to eliminate spam and unwanted email????????????????
