Lord Sainsbury has given the Labour Party eleven million quid.

Lord Sainsbury is the government's top GM consultant.

The government says that GM food is safe.

Last week, Greenpeace blockaded Sainsbury's claiming that Sainsbury's milk was from cows fed with GM feed.

Go figure. :D

Did we really expect any different result? It stands to reason that as soon as you do this to crops in the field, then the genes will spread to neighbouring fields. The government ruling on allowing a few yards for safety round each field is ridiculous. Bees can fly up to five miles per trip to gather pollen, spreading the genes. Only idiots could dream up such policies. I'm just glad that I've already had nearly 68 years of my life, even though I had to live throughout a world war. I would not like to be my grand children's age, their future is full of new and weird illnesses.

'Wrong comparison'

Peter Melchett, Soil Association policy director, told BBC News Online: "We applaud the Environmental Audit Committee for saying what we've been saying for the last five years - the biodiversity benchmark for GMs should be wildlife-friendly crops like organic ones.

"It's a key recommendation to ask whether GMs can be as good as or better than the best alternative, not the worst.

"But the government does now seem prepared to ignore not only the public and its own advisers but also Parliament in forcing GM crops on us.

The thing that saddens almost to the point of tears is that these abominations are not necessary.

I've pontificated before about the GM debate and don't want to repeat myself unduly but I wish someone could offer some proof that this artificial genetic manipulation (meddling) is necessary for the good of the planet or of mankind.

It isn't necessary and should be stopped before Monsanto (or whatever they call themselves now) achieve what Hitler never managed and take over the world because in the extreme, that is what could happen.     :( :( :( :( :( :(

Monsanto

I cannot help feeling that brown envelopes have changed hands ,which is why the gov is pushing so hard to contaminate the UK beyond recovery .

The real worry is that experimental genetically engineered plants grown to produce complex antibiotics (and not for human consumption ) , have got out into the food chain in the US as the labs (mere greenhouses) are not hermetically sealed....

It takes a very long time (10 +) years to get a new antibiotic on the market to fight viruses and fungal growths (witness the growing problem with steph in UK hospitals ,where sometimes the only way to stop its spread in the body is amputation , as nothing works)

Because these viruses/fungal growths have already been exposed to the antibiotic in the "natural" environment ,they will become hardier and more immune to even the new promising "cures" which haven't yet even passed human trails ....

Hopefully there will a law case with the organic market in the UK defining just how much compensation should be given over contamination of their crop ....If the financial price it too high in the end , it may be the only way to stop its spread , before its too late ....Once out , we cannot go back .. !

In a recent case in Canada an organic farmer was succesfully sued for breach of patent because nearby GM crops had contaminated his own.  I kid you not.  Really.

It also happened in the USA. The Monsanto spies came along and sampled the farmers crop. They found GM material in the samples, which had got there by pollution from nearby field. As he always saved some of his own seeds for next years crop, he planted seeds that had GM genes. BASTARDS.

Monsanto vs. Schmeiser

1997: Veteran Canadian farmer Percy Schmeiser discovers popular herbicide Roundup didn't kill canola plants on the roadside bordering his farm. Following his standard practice, Schmeiser saves seed to reuse the following year.

1998: Schmeiser is targeted by Monsanto for alleged biotech seed patent violations after detectives find herbicide-tolerant seed spread across about 1,000 acres of his canola fields. Schmeiser maintains his reuse of the modified seed was inadvertent.

2001: Canadian federal judge supports Monsanto's patent infringement case, saying it doesn't matter how the seed got onto Schmeiser's land or whether he intended to benefit from its reuse. Judge orders Schmeiser to pay Monsanto his 1998 profits and court costs, roughly $173,000 Canadian.

2002: A three-judge appeals panel dismisses Schmeiser's appeal.

2003: In May, the Supreme Court agrees to hear the case in Ottawa.

Tuesday: The court is expected to try to balance the interests of industry in having a strong patent law with the broader social and practical implications of giving companies control over life forms

The last paragraph in my outburst (above) is even nearer to reality than I thought.

Truth is stranger than fiction and much, much more nauseating.

I've been a chemist all my working life and I feel sickened at what is going on the name of "science" these days.

I hope the depression I'm feeling from this isn't terminal.

This can so easily backfire on the farmers.

Are we going to be told where this stuff is to be planted?

If yes then it's most likely it will be destroyed by sensible but perhaps misguided people.

If no then it's possible that ALL maize crops will be destroyed by sensible but perhaps misguided people.

The idiocy of this whole thing gets worse every day :( :( :( :( :( :(

I am not a crop terrorist.  The government are crop terrorists.  Out with them.

Couldn't agree more. The Beeb don't seem to have given any space to the reports of major problems reported in the USA, unless I have missed it in the news.

It seems that already anything related to maize and soya in the UK can (randomly)

contain trace GM as the whole of the US food processing system has been contaminated. As its a world market .......... UK cattle are already being fed mixed GM maize derived cattle feed .

It's amazing the way scientists just push forward as though they are God. THERE IS NO PROBLEM we are told. I remember when we were told that eating contaminated beef could not possibly cause CJD. I can't make up my mind just what Cheesy's agenda is in all this. Why is he so hell bent on taking the risk of contamination of the whole environment? It's the same as the argument over the MMR vaccine. "Bugger the electorate, I am Cheesy Blair, and I am God"
