I've just been to help someone out.... gave them my old mobo and processor. Transfered their hard drive and assumed it would just be a question of booting up and clearing out the dross!!

The hdd is only 2 gig and has windows me on it. But on booting I get non system disk error.

It isn't the floppy or CDrom...... has the hdd failed do you think?

Well, it could be all sorts of things here Nell.

Without being rude, as you have obviously switched everthing around, have you made sure that everything is plugged back in correctly? Check in the bios that the hard drive is being detected correctly. It may be that you need to change the jumper setting on the disc (if it was set to cable select, that may not work on the current setup so change it to master).

Next, assuming the above is OK, boot from a floppy and see if the drive is readable in dos.

You should also be able to run scandisc and things from there to verify the drive status.

Try these first then report back, we can take it from there.

Mr. M.

He he.... you know me too well Mr Mouse!!! :P

But yes I did all the checks... been into the bios...... checked the jumpers. Unplugged everything that didn't need to be plugged in.

I came home to grab a boot disk actually and thought I would ask before I nipped back. Glad to see we are thinking along the same lines.

See.......... I have learned something!! :)

ok.... guess what.  I went in the old case to get the floppy drive out and I found another hard drive lurking in there...... that was the one with the o/s on!!!!! :D

:dummies:

I didn't know that hard drives could lurk. Lurking is a bad habit.

Ahem..... I think I had better explain because I can see you are all thinking that I shouldn't be let anywhere near a computer with a posy-drive.

I whipped two Hdd's out of the old comp... one was set up as master (I assumed the o/s was on that) and one was set up as slave!!! I put them in the new set up and got the non system disk error on boot up. It was only when I went to get the floppy out of the huge old monster that was being cannibalised and replaced.... did I notice another Hdd hiding underneath the floppy drive..... That one was also set up as master and had the OS on it..... simple mistake..... anyone could make it!!
