Cyberstalking - The impact on society

Recommended Posts

well I suppose I arrived too late to make any difference. But I have been cyber stalked and it isn't fun in the least. It seems to happen frequently here in the US but not much the police will do about it apparently. If you need any info I will be glad to share.

There is a local chatroom on aol and they met every week at local clubs or had parties at their houses to socialize. I know of it occuring since at least 1998. It was always a fun way to meet the people you chat to and have something to do on the weekends. Sometime in 1999 a real wierdo joined the chat. He is mentally disabled and a really tall big guy. Scary looking. He asked several of us to exchange photos when he arrived in the room and we did. Well for some reason he took an interest in me. Everytime I signed on he messaged me right away. I soon tired of it and I blocked him. He then began to change names and saying things in email such as Bitch I will not be ignored. He did several of the women this way but for some reason me most in particular. He started saying he was going to wait for my kid to get off the bus and run over him when he was walking home.. the threats grew more intense. I and several others turned him into aol for his behavior they would ban him and he would merely make another account and start all over again. He started showing up at the gatherings on the weekends and would sit there the entire time staring at me. He gave me the creeps but I ignored him. One day I started to sign online and it said I no longer had an account. I called AOL asking what was going on, they said I had called them and told them I no longer needed my account. I protested and replied I had NOT called them. They have caller ID and gave me the number of the person who called. It was HIM. Aol would do nothing about this and acted as tho it was ok for him to do what he wanted to with my account! I finally got that resolved but his behavior continued for years. He had bomb threats called into clubs where I was going to attend a party, he had Drug inforcement agencies and police raid parties we had on the weekends where we were grilling food and brought our children. He claimed three members of the chatroom were going to blow up a high school and called the FBI, the FBI questioned one of my friends for hours until they figured out this guy was nuts. They arrested him for filing a false report. Nothing else done to him because he was considered mentally disabled. Some of the women kept his emails and threatening private messages printed them and took them to the local police. Again they did NOTHING. He somehow find out my last name and when he heard my brother was in the hospital very very ill, he called to tell him he hoped he died and he would be waiting on his sister (me) in the parking lot after I visited. We finally found out he rides a bicycle he is so mentally deranged he draws a government check and cannot get a drivers license. The call to my brother was the last straw for me. Through ways I would rather not discuss I found out where he lived. I sent a rather large male friend over to visit him. I have never heard another word from him again. There are alot of things like this happening here in the states and nobody really does anything about it. I suffered a long time from his behavior and believe me it can be a terrifying thing and you feel helpless when it happens because the ISP or nor the local police would do anything to him for his actions. I think in the past year they maybe starting to put a halt to some of this behavior but for all those years I went thru hell nobody helped. I finally had to have it handled on my own.

What an extremely unpleasant experience. In all honesty I think it just goes to reinforce the belief that you keep the INTERNET and your home life separate. I enjoy this forum very much, but that's all it is, a distant forum where we can have a laugh at a distance, seek computer advice if we need it, and help others with tips if we can.

TracyLynn,

What happened to you, I think, shocked a lot of people!

How you fixed it, made them relax again, because when we fix that problem, when it is as close and personal as that, the same applies!!!

There are many people Stalked on the Net, but most of the Idiots can't be tracked down as to WHO they are, that is where it get's Frustrating!!

Personally, I have a 13 year old Daughter, and it really worries me, and probably makes me a more than a little overprotective!!

:censored: :D
