I must admit... I paid for Mailwasher and it was £13 well spent in my opinion.

As I said, the free Beta version supplied to me by Boris is fine and I see no need to change.

A completely different kettle of fish however is Diskeeper. Yes the free version did a grand job, but it's the extras in the paid for version that are well worth while. I have mine set to run continuously in the background. Every so often a little icon appears at the bottom of the screen, and if I hover the pointer over it, it tells me that the Diskeeper engine is active. With Pentium 4, 2.4 Gig processor, I can detect no slow down. Both hard drives are always at 100% the biggest surprise however is with a boot time defrag. I set this to occur about once a month, and for the next few days the computer is supersonic. It does a scan disc and then defrags the boot up area. You would not believe the extra performance. It is well worth about £19.

This program runs at idle priority so you can continue working without Buzzsaw using your valuable CPU time.  It watches the drive for modified files and waits approximately 60 seconds before defragmentation begins.   It waits, because you may be downloading a file, etc. and there is no need to defragment the file if it is going to be modified again shortly.  It runs minimized on the task bar.  Version 2.0 decreases I/O issues by only defragmenting when the disk is greater than 95% idle.

PageDefrag

When you direct PageDefrag to defragment, the next time the system boots it will attempt to do so.  Immediately after CHKDSK examines your hard drives PageDefrag uses the standard file defragmentation APIs to defragment the files. As it processes each file PageDefrag will print on the boot-time startup screen the file name and its success at defragmenting it.  If it is successful at reducing the fragmentation it will tell you the number of clusters the file started with and the number it consists of after the defragmentation.
