christmascracker
I've just been thinking today, if I have all the eventualities covered regarding backup if something goes wrong with my pc.I've two HDD and use Acronis True Image 7 to take weekly images which I also put onto cd every two weeks. (I also take an image before any software is installed)I only have a restore disc for XP and it occured to me today that in the event that I had to replace the motherboard I would be up a creek without a paddle so to speak :( If this were the case am I right in thinking that I would have to reinstall xp and neither an image or recovery disc would be any good for this?Any ideas welcome :)Perhaps I should buy a copy of XP? Chris
The motherboard is THE major component of the computer and XP "could" have problems when it detects a new motherboard [...and everything else].The only way to know to see what really would happens would be to "try it" and see if it worked. However the odds are 50/50.When a mobo is being replaced its best to reinstall XP in my opinion. Now the restore disc: It depends how you define a "Restore Disc". The manufacturer of your PC is the key, so who made it?To save money you might as well try it...then you'll know if it worked or not.
christmascracker
Thanks PowerlessIt's an Advent PC.I'm not having any problems (keeping fingers crossed as I type) I would just like to know what it would entail if the situation arose in the future
Guest ellas
yes your backups unless you get exactly the same mobo would be no good.
pwp
it would be a waste of money to buy a disc till you were in that situation.it may never happen ( hopefully ).plus as powerless says it would also depend what is on your restore discmy comp is a medion and the restore disc is also a full oem xp. Agent Smith
Not too sure about this one people. If the data was really important, I suspect that you could restore the image to a new hard drive, then install it as a slave, at which point I would put good money on the ability to get to your data.Mr. M. Chris
That would work but you would have to take permisson of the folders first.
