CPU

My friend rang me a couple of days ago because his computer had stopped working.

He described the symptoms as the keyboard and mouse had frozen so he pressed the reset button and when it came back on there was no post beep, no picture on the monitor just the fan over the processor working and the power light and hard drive light showing.

After a bit of a discussion it turned out it was still under warranty so I told him to take it back as it was a local firm that I have dealt with, so he did.

The following day they told him it was all working again, that they had stripped it all down and tried another processor in it and it worked fine so they put his processor back in and everything ran OK.

So they informed him it must have been a LOOSE processor.

How can a processor ( AMD ) come loose when it is put in then the lever locks it in place then the heatsink is clamped on top.

Has anyone ever heard of a loose processor.

Constant cooling and warming of printed circuit boards (the motherboard in this case) can cause the copper pads on to which connections are soldered to become loose. I have known this happen with other circuits but not with a CPU but it is feasible. Moving the CPU my well have replaced the erring parts to where they should be.

I would have to agree with pops's statement, but I would also have to consider the possibility of the processor overheating.

The fact that they have removed and replaced the processor, would, I sincerely hope, mean that they have also reapplied the thermal compound. Hopefully this will be the end of it.

I would, though, get your friend to check if his Bios has a temperature reading for the processor, and if so get him to check the temp at idle, and then again after 1/2 hour of hard use.

Regards. Mr. M.

Thanks for that Pops & Mr M, I telephoned him with this information and he says it is running at 41C which sounds allright to me, so I told him to do a bit of photo editing and check it again and it was resding 42C.

So hopefully that is the problem solved.
