-pops- Posted May 6, 2004 Report Share Posted May 6, 2004 As usual, I have been astonished at the number of concerns that have been caught out by computer pests - this time: BA, HM Coastguard, Lloyds TSB, (apparently) Microsoft themselves and loads of others probably too embarrassed to reveal it.A Microsoft Security Bulletin was issued on April 13 (MS04-011) with a Security Update and a patch (835732). This was long before Sasser became widespread.What have the IT departments of these (some very large) companies been doing? Even if your setup may be out of date, there is no excuse for not keeping whatever you do have in tip-top condition, especially security wise.The companies in some of the examples I gave have responsibilities for people's health, wealth and safety. You also have certain people who push the "if it isn't broke don't fix it" view and by the time you discover it is broke it is too late to fix it.No doubt there are too many under qualified people working in IT Support teams and no company is prepared to invest in training until it is too late. The same is true of backups, how many people/companies really have good backup systems in place until AFTER they have needed them?The industry is going to have to learn if it is going to continue to survive.
