djohn Posted May 8, 2004 Report Share Posted May 8, 2004 I agree that the actions of the people concerned in this tragic incident should face the the most severe form of punishment if found guilty. I refuse to call them Soldiers! :angry: Each and every one of them right through to the commanding officer of the prison[General] are part time reservist and are/were in Iraq against their wishes, doing a job that they were not trained for.Completely lacking in the discipline of a dedicated Soldier serving his/her regiment and country with pride and Honour.There is no excuse for what they did, they were not even under the intense pressure of war/fighting conditions that can affect even the most well balanced person.I don't follow politics too closely, I don't understand the way their [Politicians] minds work, I can listen to one point of view and agree completely until I hear the other side then I'm completely confused as to who is telling the truth. I would not make a good politician! :( Yesterday I listened to the full hearings before both houses on SKY news from 4:30 through to 9pm. Although I have no personal likes/dislikes or knowledge of D. Rumsfeld I did feel he gave an honest, truthful account of what he knew, and when he knew of it.His apology seemed sincere and heartfelt. The shame was clear to see on his face. He stated he was ready to resign immediately if it would help the situation. His wish is to carry through to the end of this incident and uncover all the wrong doings that have occurred.I believe strongly in the freedom of the press/media to inform us of what is happening but to air those photo's at the time they did has caused more harm than can be imagined. Already there are bounties on the US and our Soldiers, can you imagine what will happen to them if caught.The US army was well aware of things not being right as far back as last October, they had already started Courts Martial actions on six people and removed many others from the prison in Iraq. They had confirmed back in Jan.04 on TV that there were complaints and accusations of mistreatment and these were being looked into and appropriate action being taken. All they asked of CNN was not to show the photo's until a full investigation had taken place. CNN refused, they just had to be the first to show the pictures.I'm just listening to SKY now and hear that a Holy war has been declared against our Solders in Basra with a reward for each one captured. This is tragic not only to our Soldiers but also to all the people of Iraq who wish to lead a peaceful life. Seymour Hersch - said there was more to come regarding the scale of abuse and that responsibility went up to the Pentagon.Rumsfeld is on record after Sept 11th that the Geneva Convention was out the window.Be interesting to see how all the Right Wingers react if its proved the administration was condoning and actively pusuing these methods of obtaining information.
