christmascracker Posted May 15, 2004 Report Share Posted May 15, 2004 As you may know I bought a new graphics card during the week. At the same time I bought a new PSU. The original one that came with the pc 4 months ago was 300w and the new one was a 500w.Everything has been fine all week until yesterday when I ran a HDD health check from floppy. About half way through the drive test a siren started to go off which I presume was the CPU temperature limit thingy that I've set in the bios to go off if it reaches a certain temp. I turned the PC off straight away. The side of the case was really quite warm too (hot!) :( I put the 300w PSU back and ran it again - test finnished and no problems at all.So........ what do I do now? I'll be taking the psu back and getting a refund but do I stick with the original 300w or buy a decent PSU?All advice gratefully appreciated :) The original 300w is a Seasonic and the new 500w was a qtec if thats of any help Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Agent Smith Posted May 15, 2004 Report Share Posted May 15, 2004 I would have to say that I would be very surprised if simply adding a more powerful psu caused your processor to overheat. At this point I would have to question that you had all the relevant connections plugged in. I would imagine that the newer 500w supply has got several extra plugs than your old one.Did you ensure that once setup, all your fans were running correctly prior to closing the case?Also, is the fan or fans on the new psu running correctly, and because psu's come in different shapes and sizes, when fitted to your case, have you ensured that all the ventilation holes are free to do their job?Mr. M. I have recently bought one of these Tagan TG480-U01 from here Overclockers ,and although it was £60.00 it is brilliant.It is almost totally silent when running, has more than enough connections to do anything you want, and comes with those nice sticky Velcro things to keep your wires tidy :D :P I would definitely recommend these.Mr. M. Guest ellas Posted May 15, 2004 Report Share Posted May 15, 2004 before you rush out and buy a psu are you sure you have enough cooling in your system,any case fans? underpowered psu's often cause crashes and not psu overheating,I would investigate futher before replacing the psu,plus what have you set it to in the bios and does your mobo not support monitoring i.e software like asus probe. Put the 300w psu in and ran it again, everything ok. Just to check I put the 500w back in and ran it and it happened again. Boris Posted May 15, 2004 Report Share Posted May 15, 2004 Just for info - I've fitted over a dozen of these QTec 550W Gold Twin Fan PSU's in the last 12 months. On a new build I now usually remove the standard cheap 300/350W PSU which comes with the case and put one of these in.Although they're obviously not proper "550W" rated - they're more than enough for any normal use and well worth the £20-22 I usually pay for them at Fairs.Good build quality.
