nellie2 Posted May 19, 2004 Report Share Posted May 19, 2004 The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) helps you to make sure your telephone number is no longer available to organisations who may telephone you with offers and information you do not wish to receive.Under Government legislation introduced on 1 May 1999 it is unlawful to make unsolicited direct marketing calls to individuals who have indicated that they do not want to receive such calls.You can either do this by contacting companies directly and asking them not to call you or you can register with a central register - the TPS.Before you register however, you should reflect on the fact that registering may well prevent you from receiving information which you would really like to have - thereby cutting you off from relevant and worthwhile opportunities. -pops- Posted May 20, 2004 Report Share Posted May 20, 2004 While you're there, register with the mps (mail preference service) and the fps (fax preference service) if you have a fax.These take a few weeks to become effective but they do work. I have a fax setup for business use and before registration I was getting more than 100 junk faxes per week. In the last four years since signing up with fps, I've had only one. However, we keep getting these recorded messages that start " Congratulations, you are guaranteed to have one one of these fantastic prizes in our lucky telephone number draw, a BMW, £50,000 cash, a ........you get the gist.The thing is the recording urges you to telephone a specific number that is repeated about five times to "Register" your "Win" and to claim your "Prize". Now this number is an 0906 number or similar, whatever it is a premium rate. Where they go horribly wrong is that nowhere in recording do they tell you this. Nor do they tell you that it will cost £2.00 per minute and last for about ten minutes. Nor do they tell you who they ARE, their address or a postal method of claiming.All strictly illegal.So, guess who has just been filling out a witness statement for Ofcom and BT having reported the company? Yep, and if you wonder why I did this rather than simply ignore it, it is because we did not change the number when we moved in (so i could order BB beofre we actually moved) and the owner ofthe house before us was a pensioner and very easily taken in by such scams.We will see what happens... Soon u will be pretendin to be gettin realy shouty.
