-pops- Posted June 6, 2004 Report Share Posted June 6, 2004 It's not only chlamydia that condoms protect against - there's gonorrhoea, syphilis, non-specific urethritis, HIV, genital herpes, trichomoniasis, candidiasis, chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum, granuloma inguinale, genitial warts, viral hepatitis and others. These are not things, as some think, that just require a shot of penicillin at the VD clinic, they can be severe, incurable, disabling and fatal. Perhaps the most severe, and certainly the most expensive, thing that condoms provide is protection against pregnancy.But my main point of this is that it is only the prudish and prurient Victorian attititude that the British have about things sexual that this condom transport system should even raise an eyebrow never mind raising anything more pertinent to the discussion.Perhaps if there was more free information and conversation about sex and all its implications between parents and offspring and between peers without back-of-the-hand tittering and embarrassment, things may be somewhat different in Britain. They may not then continually (for many, many years anyway) hold the record for the greatest numbers of underage/unwanted pregnancies and perhaps if some youngsters were actually taught how babies were made instead of them going through the motions for a bit of fun, unaware of any consequences, that this social burden and expense (often an expense to all of us) could be lifted. They might not then form great queues at doctor's surgeries on a Monday moring wanting the morning after pill. They might not then form acutely embarrassed queues at the STD clinics with inexplicable (to them) symptoms.I am not advocating any sort of sexual revolution except insofar as education in the matter(s). Ignorance is very dangerous.I've strayed of the subject somewhat but I hope I have got my feelings across and they are relevant to the matter in hand.
