SLAX - Linux

SLAX is a small bootable CD containing the Linux operating system. It runs Linux directly from the CD without installing. The Live CD described here is based on the Slackware GNU Linux distribution and is downloadable from this website as an ISO image. All scripts and source code are available and can be used to build your own Live CD.

To be honest CC, I would download 'em all.

Well 3 or 4! :o

Then you can get to know which one you like. In a way there all the same, but they look different [some nice, some not] you've got all the software you'll ever need on the CD's.

Glad you like it  :D  If your willing to install slackware on a partition, i'd be more than willing to help you  :D

Thanks, I might just take you up on your kind offer :)

There seem to be so many versions of Linux which one is the best (or easiest in my case)?

It's all a mater of personal choice, as to which distro you use. That's the great thing about Linux, IT'S NOT WINDOWS. You can customize your OS to meet YOUR needs. You can add / remove packages that you want or don't want. I recomend trying a number of different Live CD's, because there are many differences (and similarities) between each.

I like Knoppix most.

Linspire or 'Lindows' is too much like windows, I use linux to get away from that.

Hmmm up to you.

If you do have any problems, your Windows XP [?] would be perfectly ok as its on the other drive.

But if something went horribly wrong then you could lose your backups.

But I have the same setup as you and did install Madrake Linux to my second drive, but it was all fine.

Put it on the second hard drive. The first time I put Xp & Mandrake on the same drive I issued a wrong command in root and trashed XP & mandrake.

So I had to re-install every thing.

Linux is nothing like windows, it can be fun learning it at times and other times very very frustrating.

But when you get it to work right it is far better than Windows.
