I just did something STUPID

I've been dual booting with Redhat for a while but I could never get it to work properly... probably my fault for not having a really good fiddle with it.

Anyway, I decided to free up the partition with redhat on it... and so I did.... completely forgetting about my masterboot record!

So when I restarted the computer.... I just got a blank screen with a message about not being able to find a kernal!!

Luckily.... I remembered I had done something stupid like this before so I stuck the xp disk into my drive and booted into the recovery console.... got into my C drive and then typed help, because I can never remember the commands!!

I fixed the MBR from there and managed to get windows up and running ok!! Moral of the story..... Never just delete stuff without thinking of all the consequences

We've all done it, nel.

That's why powerless and myself are always badgering about backups and things.

With something like that, it's not often that anyone does it twice :)

Yes it does. The file system of the computer has nothing to do with the Master Boot Record.

trust me, I've been installing linux for 6 years now, and repairing windows MBR's for twice that length of time.

The fdisk command don't much care whats on the hard drive.

It is a much faster method then jumping through all the hoops of booting from the XP CD and getting to the command console.
