Guest Nellie2
There is one called Sygate...I haven't used it myself but have heard of good reports.......go here and scroll down the list until you get to the Sygate link.http://gwynneb.netfirms.com/favourite%20things.htmYeah ok, I know I could have given you the Sygate link direct but I'm showing off ok!!!!! :)
Scarthy © ® ™
Damo - You could always re-format and re-install Norton....You then get another 12 months of subscriptions. ;)I have a file that may help you. If you PM me I will send you the link to download it. ;)
Guest Damo
Thanks gwen and scarthy, ill have a look.....whats the score with the legality of extending your subscription using that tool, dont get me wrong, im not preaching or anything, just fancy a change
Guest Nellie2
Or you could completely remove it from your registry........careful!!.......and start again. I did this on W98 a while back and it worked with the 2001 edition. Instructions here.http://search.symantec.com/custom/us/techs...p/kb/query.htmlwould just like to say that I had to completely remove it because it had gone all corrupted......no other reason  but was surprised to find that I started again with the subscription thingy. Scarthy © ® ™
The only other Firewall program I have used is Sygate. I used the free version. It's OK, but nothing special... :)
Guest Damo
ive just tried the free edition of Zone alarm, dont really like it, might have a look at sygate then.I dont think the firewall market is the same as the AV market, there's quite a few free av programs out there, but only 2 free firewalls! Guest Nellie2
Actually.......I have just had a look on Cnet and there are quite a few free firewalls but Zone Alarm and Sygate are the only ones I know about. Here is the link for the first pagehttp://download.com.com/3120-2001-0-1-0.ht...=49&dlsize=&ca=
Scarthy © ® ™
A word of advice on Sygate....It will ask you for your details to register the software...I suggest you give it wrong info. It will also 'fake attack' you in order for you to upgrade to the pro version...(or so I am told) ;) If your bothered by the Sygate registration screen popping up at times, you can "dummy" register it yourself. Taking the usual precautions, open regedit and navigate to:- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sygate Technologies, Inc.\Sygate Personal Firewall click on that last folder, then double click each of these entries entering the value against it:- company_name "none" email "noone@home. co.uk phone_number "012 2345 6789" position "none" Session 0x00000001 (1) (NB:just enter 1 to get that line.) user_name "anonymous" user_type "0x0000000 (0) (again just enter 0 to get that line.) Regedit puts in the quotation marks, you don't need to type them.

Guest Nellie2
Well I have just been reading the reviews on Sygate on Cnet and they are very positive............I wonder if anyone in the forum uses it and can give you some feedback Damo! peter e
I tried Zone-Alarm initially but didn't like it much. I switched to Sygate (free one) about 6 months ago and have had no problems at all. It very occasionally warns me that I'm being scanned and I can check the log of what's been happening. Now and then I visit a site that checks out firewalls by faking an attack and it always comes out as OK. I don't get hassled to upgrade to the "pay for" version. It was quick to download and easy to install. All in all I think it's excellent (but I'm no expert).Pete
Guest ellas
peter e have you tried the latest za its very good,as someone running two computers one with za the other sygate in my opinion za is a much better firewall.
mark2
I've used 3 different Free firewalls, Outpost, Sygate and ZA, the easiest I found to use was Sygate, easy to set up, good logging and easy to juse whois/backtrace. I found ZA getting a bit resource hungry nowadays, and had one or two hiccups with XP, not insurmountable and now fixed I believe, but I'm just lazy. :o Outpost has some extras , can't remember what they are now, adblocking was 1 I think. Two others spring to mind Tiny and Kerio both have free versions
Guest Cookie
Had ZA PRO until they told me my support was coming to an end so thought I'd try Sygate. So far so good, no problems and not yet hassled to upgrade. Easy to use and change settings etc.
Sureshot
Can anyone tell me how much the subscription is to NAV after the first year is up?And whether having 2 firewalls conflicts causes them to conflict with each other or work in tandem?? Boris
Outpost,Kerio,Zone Alarm,Tinyand Sygate are the best of the free ones to choose from - I've tried all 5.They all have their good and bad points !My personal preference was Outpost, but the family couldn't get used to it, so I've gone back to ZA. Guest moon
I'm an ex ZA user and , excellent though it is, Outpost Free is better. It's more versatile, for one, and behaves properly for networking. Just tuppence worth. :) http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/
