joysness
Hi All,Hope someone can help.I found out yesterday that my recycle bin isn't working. When I delete a file, I get the message "are you sure you want to send this to the recylce bin?" but when I click yes the files just disappear. They do not show up in the recycle bin at all.I have noticed that in the My Recent Documents folder everything shows as a shortcut. The deleted files show here but when I click the link it says it has been changed or is in use and do I want to delete the shortcut. I have AVG free version, ZoneAlarm 4.5.594 free, SpywareBlaster and Spybot S&D. I also had IE-spyad installed but thought it may have been this that caused the problem so I unistalled it.I have tried to restore to a prior date using system restore but it would not let me. I made sure the box "Do not move files to recycle bin, remove files immediately when deleted" in the recycle bin was not checked.Ran AVG and Spybot and they show all clear.Anyone have any idea what's going on and how I can fix this? Thanks for any help anyone can give. :flowers: PS I have an eMachine using Windows XP Home
Scarecrow Man
Very strange joysness. Here's what I want you to do:Open up an explorer window (not Internet Explorer but My Computer, or something like that.) Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click the View tab, and scroll down a few lines until 'Hide protected operating system files (Recomended)'. Clear that box. Then, if you have 1 drive or partition, go to C:\Recycler and see if there is anything in these folders. If you have more than one drive or partition, check the others as well, using the same method, D:\Recycler, or E:\Recycler.and Post back. joysness
Hi Scarecrow Man,Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you.OK. I found the recycler folder and inside I found three recylce bin icons with numbers after them.first number S-1-5-21-1409082233-167712...second S-1-5-21-4269483969-995690...third same S-1-5-21-4269483969-995690...When I clicked on the icons all the folders were empty.Hope this helps.Any idea what happened? Thanks so much for your help
Scarecrow Man
That's where the files actually go when they get sent to the recycling bin. They are just not accounted for by windows if they are in that folder.Hmm. Do you have or had Norton installed? It changes the properties of the recycling bin. joysness
No I do not have and have not used any Norton products on this computer.I have AVG free, ZoneAlarm 4.5 free, Spybot S&D and Spywareblaster.I do run Panda Active Scan and TrendMicro Scan about once a month also.I did have McAfee Antivirus and firewall but got rid of it about a year ago. The recycle bin was working fine, but I just noticed this behavior a few days ago.I had downloaded IE Spyad in August but it was having some conflicts with both Spybot and SpywareBlaster so I uninstalled it. I thought it might be the culprit. But the uninstall didn't help. :(

joysness
I went to the Recycle Bin, but when I click on properties the choices I get areGlobal or Local Disk (C:). I can't seem to find Ownership anywhere !? I also tried a fix from Kelly's Korner to restore or repair the recycle bin. It didn't work either. trackrat
Is your Maximum size of recycle bin set to zero?.
joysness
How do I find the Recycler Directory?I have tried searching files and folders but can't find anything. Also opened regedit and found things call permissions but I don't know where the Recycler directory is so I can't check to see if the permissions are correct.I tried to edit my post but can't seem to find an edit post button. rong
Just had a play, try opening the recycle bin, right click, properties, globle there is a box just above the slider, if this is ticked well read it.
joysness
Thanks All,For now if I really need to delete something I'll just send it to a CD or floppy disk so if I need it again I'll have it. I'll keep looking for a fix too and if I find one I'll post it in case anyone else has this problem.Edit: Just found the edit button :D Rong,That box is not checked. What puzzles me most is that it was working fine and then suddenly it wasn't. And I don't mess with things much because I'm not that saavy about the inner workings. How does something get corrupted anyway?? :(
christmascracker
You could try sfc /scannow which will replace any corrupt files. With your xp disc in the drive go to start/run and type sfc /scannow Worth a tryOr a repair of XP http://www.windowsforum.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=10455

joysness
Thanks CC and Nel,OK (hangs head and looks sheepish) I don't have SP1 or SP2 on my PC :o I have an eMachine with XP Home and I have only been able to keep a few of the patches and hotfixes because whenever I install them they render the machine pretty much useless so I have to uninstall them. Also I'm on dialup and it takes hours to download files (current rate averages 2.9 kb/sec)anyway... I really get nervous trying to do something like that because I really don't know what I'm doing.I really need step by step instruction. I have no idea how to do this.. Copy the 1386 to c:\windows\i386, you would then redirect to that directory rather than D: or whatever drive your CD is.sorry..
christmascracker
Right, I've had another look at spikeys' post and found this bit that might be a bit easier for you. He says"You could burn the I386 folder to CD and use that instead"To do this bit, put your restore disc in the drive and explore it. Find the folder I386 and burn this to a cd.Hope it works :flowers:
joysness
OK I'm off to find the restore CD.Thanks CC, I'll give it a try
joysness
I'm Baaaaack :D I found the restore cd, so do I start the computer then put the cd in and explore, find the I386 folder, copy it to another cd?Then reboot, put in cd with new I386 folder on it?Do I then delete the C:\Windows\I386 folder that's currently on the hard drive and replace it with the copied one on the cd? or?And is the correct folder the C:\Windows\I386, 'cause when I did a search I found lots of I386 and i386 folders in different areas of the hard drive. Thanks for all your help :flowers: I love this forum
Scarecrow Man
You should be able to copy the i386 directory somewhere on your harddrive, and run the program from there.
