djyod
Well I guess I toasted something! I needed to replace my Directv-tivo series 2 hard drive so I was following the "Hinsdale" how-to guide. The problem is that after replacing my PC hard drive back into the pc , it will not boot. I keep getting the message "NTDETECT FAILED" . I figured well not a huge problem, I will just go ahead and reformat and reinstall window xp and surly that will fix the problem. WRONG! I have tried reformating and reinstalling window now several times but can not get past this "NTDETECT FAILED" message. I even tried another hard drive as well. I flash my BIOS. Just can't figure it out. Were do I go from here? :(

djyod
Thanks for the suggesttions, It seems like they are talking about booting into an installation of windows. What I don't understan is I am no longer trying boot into windows, I am now trying install it on a reformated drive. Should I still be getting this message? If the problem is not the drive than were else could it be?

Scarecrow Man
Get a 98 bootdisk from http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and start your computer from that. Start fdisk, by typing 'fdisk' in at the prompt, and follow the instructions to delete a non-dos partition. Then create a Primary Dos partition, set it active and reboot.Start from the floppy again, and type 'format C:'. Then reboot from the windows CD, and install.
djyod
I am using the original Windows XP Home Edition CD to do the install on a freshly formated hard drive. I put this drive on one of my other computers to make sure it was formatted properly and readable. After the install cd copies all the files it needs to do the install, it than wants to restart the computer, (which is normal) when the computer starts back up, the install does not resume, it says NTDETECT failed and tries to restart again, this will continue cycle untill I power off the computer.
