Scarecrow Man Posted October 21, 2004 Report Share Posted October 21, 2004 I have a very noisey computer. The PSU and CPU fans were making noise. I cleaned the inside with some air, but the PSU fan still hums quite loudly. It is directly attached to the PSU and I don'y think it comes off without opening the PSU. However, in modern ATX PSUs there are two things that keep this from happening when you unplug the AC power cord but keep it plugged into the motherboard: the +5Vsb line and the trickle-discharge resistors. The +5Vsb line is one of the wires going to the motherboard, it is a 5V power supply that stays on even if the computer is "off" if it's still plugged in and is used for Wake On LAN and the front panel power switch circuitry. The trickle-discharge resistors are each around 150-750 kilohm resistors placed across the capacitors in the PSU to keep the curious from killing themselves quite as easily, they lower the discharge time to around an hour I believe. However, by far the best way to discharge the capacitors fully is to unplug the system (but leave the PSU connected to the motherboard) and then try to turn it on. You should see hear the HDDs start to spin up and see the fans whir, maybe the lights on the keyboard will flash and then it's discharged. Do it two or three times just to be certain it's finished.
