I want to try Trend Micro but it requires you to shut down your firewall program...I use Zone Alarm and am happy with it. Norton (reportedly) is a resource hog. I am willing to pay the money for a good program if that is what it takes. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for your comments. Note: I hope this is the correct forum/room to post this in. First of all the free version then, feeling a little guilty about having such good service for free for such a long time, I got the paid for version.I've installed AVG in many machines that I have built for others as well as recommending it. Never had complaints about it.As with all anti-virus software, it is vital that it is kept up to date - out of date A/V is worse than useless. Chris Posted October 31, 2004 Report Share Posted October 31, 2004 You can ask a million people what AV they use and you'll get a million answers, very different answers thrown back at you.As long as you have AV you will be OK to a point as NO AV is 100% effective. The majority of the time it is the users incompetence to understand there product and what is required to keep it as effective as possible. Uderstanding a few DO's and DONT'S help as well.I've used Norton AV and have no trouble with them, others to but there you go. You have a problem with Avast, others will not.As for Norton being a Resource hog, well on modern machines I don't see how. Unless you value every byte of your RAM, your boot time etc.One AV that never really gets a mention is NOD32: http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm maybe check it out and report back.My definition of good AV is one that works or at least has a history of good working. :wacko: It also has to be silent in it's operation, not always interupting the user. One that is easy to configure [although I would take 100% effectiveness over a naff GUI any day.] Automatically updating is a must as AV updates are as important as turning of the gas stove. For me Norton does this when it requires and I have not [touch wood] had any trouble yet. Email scanning [in and out] is almost a must. As viruses are sent through email let the AV sort it out. Not forgetting the golden rules of dealing with email along the way...You can choose just about any AV [well apart from avast] and i'm sure you won't be dissapointed...with any. Kirk Posted October 31, 2004 Report Share Posted October 31, 2004 well, right now i use nis2004. and ive heard people say its a hog. but i have heard the nis2005 is way better cuz they have cut down on the resource hogging prgs. im really thinking bout going upgrade to nis2005. i was considering going to ayatem works and teh personal firewall, all norton but after confering with symantec about it , i found out you'll have to pay for 2 seperate services after the initial first year with purchase, decided if i do i will go w/ nis2005 instead. 1 package service fee, of course after the first years service w/purchase.
