New XP installation with integrated SP2

Recommended Posts

I'm doing my first installation of WXP with integrated SP2 soon.

Am I right in thinking that I don't need to download any virus patches etc before connecting up to the Internet - as was becoming the norm a few months ago before SP2?

yeah, i just ordered a full oem ver xp home from newegg. if you buy some cheap thing, like what i got , a cable splitter for 1.69 then you can buy the oem full xp home for 91 bucks. cost me less than 97 bucks all together. cheaper than the upgrade.

Yep, same in the UK but on this occasion I was building a whole new system so there was no "stretching" of the rules regarding OEM versions :)

Very pleased with the new machine. It's in an Antec Aria "cube" case with a Asus A7V400-MX microATX motherboard. Athlon XP 2800 fitted with a Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU Super Flower Cooler, 1GB Crucial RAM, 2 x 80GB Maxtor HDD and a NEC 3500 DVD RW. Quite a squeeze to get it assembled - especially with my arthritic fingers and the small space to work in but it's done. :)

Funnily enough I reformatted yesterday! :D I loaded SP2 and then went to Windows update, the only extra thing I needed to download was this

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB834707)

A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise a computer running Internet Explorer and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

good info there trackrat. i should be getting my new xp home w/sp2 intergrated this week and installing it. i think since sp2 is already on the same disk and installed when i install the os i wont need the autostream. unless it was on a seperate disk from the os then id say it would work that way. right now im using xp home w/sp1 intergrated and it installed sp1 at the same time when the os was installing. and i assume since the new os is setup the same w/sp2 intergrated that this prg wont do me any good. am i correct in this assumption?

New purchases of XP should all have SP2 integrated into the disk now - you don't even know it's there.

The O/S is installed as it normally is. There are no extra things to do to install SP2.

If you new XP has SP2 as a separate item, refuse it or get it at a huge discount as it's old stock.

its supposed to be intergrated on the os disk so i should be jus fine. it should install jus like the dell os did. it has sp1 intergrated on it. and yep your right i never noticed any thing when it installed since everything was on the same cd. and the new xp home oem full w/sp2 should do the same. once i get it. oh and if need be. i have the sp2 cd i got from ms sent to me in the mail. but i shouldnt need it with it intergrated on the xp disk.
