spikeychris Posted December 11, 2004 Report Share Posted December 11, 2004 If it cant open the volume then there is something using it, does your mother use Zonealrm? if so post back. You can also schedule Chkdsk to run at startup and use the /X switch, this will force a dismount and allow a chkdsk.Just do what you have already been doing, IE: start, run and type chkdsk but add "/x" after it. She could also run the recovery console for chkdsk, it would mean starting the computer from the Windows CD-Rom. Press enter at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows XP installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. It will ask for an admin password, if she set one use it otherwise just hit enter. spikeychris Posted December 11, 2004 Report Share Posted December 11, 2004 If the above options fail then there is a long winded way to prevent zonealrm interfering but the simplest way is to just type "services.msc" into run and scrolling down until you find "TrueVector" double click it and click "stop service" run the chkdsk then start the service again or just reboot and it will auto start (as long as you don't select the disable option) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

christmascracker Posted December 11, 2004 Author Report Share Posted December 11, 2004 Well.........she's just been on the phone again, tried the above suggestions (I talked it through over the phone) and it's still the same :angry: When she put the recovery disc in she gets 2 options 1) install windows and 2) boot from/to (can't remember which) the command prompt.So.........would she be able to type in chkdsk /r from there?If this doesn't work I suppose a restore would be the best thing, don't you think? :( Thanks again for your help. If it hasn't you can download the six floppies and just do the same. You don't say whether its Pro or Home but click here for XP Home and click here for XP Pro.
