all i did on mine was go in and turn off the windows firewall and any notifications therein of it and the virus protection and the auto updates in the security center. basically turn off the security center. i use nis2005's firewall and didnt want the SC telling me crap every five seconds. so far ive had no probs. i also seen that it has the messenger service, the one in sp1 that windows told everyone to disable, was already disabled at the get go. thats pretty much all i did with mine.

I would highly advise against unchecking everything in startup from msconfig. First of all, there are some key items in there that your hardware may utilize. One example is if you are using a MS office keyboard, type32 is required to be running to use the hotkeys and buttons. Also many processes required by norton's internet security and other firewall software is in there, turning it off is ill advised.

Before you uncheck stuff wildly check the processes out at http://www.answersthatwork.com

simply use the tasklist and find out what the processes are. If processes are not on this list, check and see what they are associated with by looking at the paths.

This is true - but I run a barebones system - no fancy gfx card, audio, etc

There are no excess programs that have to load on my machine.

Right, but powerless may not be running such a system, and therefore it is not necessarily wise for him to do that.

I think he was just asking so we could collaberate and "make the ultimate sp2 system". But your right about unchecking everything. A lot of it you can just get rid of, but it's best to know what your unchecking before you do it.

This is true, but the original question was "What do you do" not "What should I do" - there's a difference there and I answered the question truthfully and in the correct context.
